SELECTION OF RIVER STATIONS
Main rules:
• At least 1 station per 1000 km2
• The selected stations should be geographically spread across
the country, and be representative for the country.
• Small, medium large,
very large and largest
rivers should be included.
small <50 km2 upstream catchment
medium 50-250 km2 upstream catchment
large 250-1000 km2 upstream catchment
very large 1000-2500 km2 upstream catchment
largest >2500 km2 upstream catchment
• Both reference, representative and impact stations should be
selected.

3
STATIONS TYPES
Reference stations (if possible, around 10% of all stations):
• little or no human activity
• >90% natural landscape
Representative stations:
• to reflect the general quality of the river
• quality is influenced by diffuse and/or point
sources of pollution from upstream activitites
• pollutants from point sources are fully mixed
and diluted within the ambient water
Impact stations:
• located within the zone, where initial mixing
of discharges takes place
• concentrations maybe worste case

At least 2 out of the following criteria are met:
1. More than 75% of sites identified and described, OR
2. Delivery of hazardous substances data,
1. Timely data delivery to national repository, and
2. Data delivered in the requested format, OR long time
series (more than 10 years) for phosphorus, nitrogen and
oxygen available.
Delayed data delivery under Eionet-Water data collection
(i.e. after the delivery deadline). OR Timely delivery, but
