EU blue card
The EU blue card is a residence permit for highly skilled university graduates who
are third country nationals.

First-time applications have to be submitted to the Austrian diplomatic
representation abroad. Persons, who are eligible for visa-free entry, can submit
the application in person to the immigration office in Austria during the validity
period of their visa.
The application can also be submitted by the employer.
• proof of German language skills before coming to Austria and completion of
Module I is not required
• EU blue card can be issued with a validity period of 24 months
• free labour market access in case of extension
• permanent leave to remain can be obtained more quickly and mobility in the
EU is facilitated (EU blue card from other EU member states can be
considered)
• quota-free family reunification (red-white-red card plus)
Required documents:
• 1 current (no older than six months) biometric
passport photo
(3.5 x 4.5 cm)
• passport valid at least throughout the validity period of the EU blue card
• birth certificate
• if applicable: marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate, divorce
decree or certificate proving the solution of a civil partnership
• for persons over 14 years of age: police clearance certificate from your
country of origin (it is not mandatory to submit this document but it can be
necessary to evaluate the case)
• proof of health insurance that is valid in Austria and covers all risks (e.g.
compulsory insurance under the General Social Insurance Act, ASVG)
• proof of a binding job offer for a highly skilled employment for at least one
year
• minimum gross salary of € 4.174 (2016) as laid out in an employment
contract
• written declaration by the employer (“Arbeitgebererklärung”)
• proof of qualifications and proof of the status of the university and duration
of studies
Please submit the original and a copy of all documents. Depending on the country
of issue the original documents need an apostille or diplomatic certification.
Please submit a certified translation of all documents that were not originally
issued in German.
In some cases it may be necessary to submit additional documents. These can
also be submitted via post, fax or e-mail.
Please note:
All persons who are older than six (6) years of age have to give their fingerprints
when applying for a residence permit.
