claim: warrants evidence

10 SEPT 2015
BELL ACTIVITY: READ SILENTLY FOR YOUR IRB, WHICH IS
DUE TOMORROW.
Today’s agenda:
Visual representation of an information paragraph.
T-chart practice in pairs
Pumpkin pie paragraph
More t-charts
In each section fill in the key points:
The CLAIM is
the POINT of the paragraph that
must be proven. Without the claim
the writer is just slapping a bunch of sentences together.
WARRANTS are big reasons that support the claim, but they aren’t specific enough
to prove the claim without more specific evidence.
EVIDENCE is what makes a paragraph believable, interesting, worth
reading. There must be enough evidence to support the warrant, so the
writer needs 2-3 points of evidence for every warrant.
MULTIPLE WARRANTS are needed. A paragraph needs more than one warrant to
support a claim effectively. A strong paragraph typically contains 2-3 warrants.
EVIDENCE should make up the bulk of the paragraph. If the writer
provides 2-3 points of evidence for each warrant and there are 2-3
warrants he/she has a strongly organized paragraph. When the
evidence proves the warrants and the warrants support the claim,
together they make a strong point

BUILDING A PARAGRAPH
USING WHAT YOU FIND IN THE ENVELOPE ON YOUR DESK, YOU AND YOUR PARTNER WILL
BE BUILDING A T-CHART.
THE ENVELOPE CONTAINS:
A BLANK T-CHART
A CLAIM
2 WARRANTS THAT SUPPORT THE CLAIM
8 BITS OF EVIDENCE WHICH SUPPORT THE 2 WARRANTS
1. EMPTY THE ENVELOPE & UNFOLD THE TEMPLATE TO ARRANGE THE PIECES ON.
2. READ THROUGH EACH ITEM AND FIND THE CLAIM, THE WARRANTS THAT SUPPORT
THE CLAIM AND THE 8 PIECES OF EVIDENCE THAT PROVE THE WARRANTS.
3. ARRANGE THE STATEMENTS CORRECTLY ON YOUR BLANK T-CHART AND RAISE
YOUR HAND.
4. IF YOU HAVE ANY ERRORS THE TEACHER WILL TELL YOU AND YOU CAN START
AGAIN.
KINESTHETIC ACTIVITY: Arrange the following statements on your tchart

Although many consider pumpkin pie a simple dessert, it is the
perfect survival food. Pumpkin pie is loaded with vitamins and nutrition. It is
made from a squash, a tremendously nutritious vegetable. Also, pumpkin pie
contains the protein of eggs, the dairy of milk and the grain of the wheat flour crust.
When one considers the oil in the crust, pumpkin pie contains all the food groups.
Furthermore, pumpkin pie tastes good enough to eat day after day. Few items taste
as good as a warm pumpkin pie, with a dollop of whipped cream. Pumpkin pie is
the perfect combination of a flaky crust, sweet nutmeg and a creamy pumpkin
custard that people crave long after Thanksgiving.
