Game project documentation
Instructions and answers for tutors
These instructions cover the learner activity section which can be found on page 5. This
Lesson Element supports Cambridge Technicals Level 3 in Digital Media.
When distributing the activity section to the learners either as a printed copy or as a
Word file you will need to remove the tutor instructions section.
The activity
Once a brief has been analysed then the planning of a project needs to take place. This
lesson is about learners developing their ability to plan a project by looking at its
requirements in terms of locations and equipment.
Suggested timings
Activity 1: 20 minutes.
Activity 2: 25 minutes.
ABC – This activity offers an
opportunity for English skills
development.

Activity 1
The group should be divided into pairs for this activity. In their pairs, the learners should
study the client brief for the Road Safety Computer Game and then, using the internet to
research relevant staffing roles:
1. Identify the staffing roles that will be required for the creation of the Road Safety
Computer Game.
2. For the roles that they have identified, state the skills that will be required.
Learners will need to have been taught about staffing a project and how to assign roles to
people. Learners are not expected to know what is needed for computer game production in
detail; however, they should know the basic roles needed. There are a number of resources
on the internet where research can be carried out by learners to find out what these roles
are.

Client brief: Road Safety Computer Game
You have just started work for a well-established company that specialises in creative and
educational electronic games. The company has been approached by a road safety
organisation, who would be interested to see how games could be used to promote the
launch of a new road safety campaign. They are not aware of any games on the market that
do this.
You have been asked to submit a design proposal for one level of a new game based on
teaching children how to use the roads safely. The game must have clearly defined
objectives by which the child playing it can progress through to higher levels. There must be
a scoring and time tracking system. The game must also be instructional in how to use the
roads safely.
The target audience for the game is children aged between the ages of 6 and 10. The game
is to be played on touch enabled devices.
The campaign is due to be launched in four months’ time. The game needs to be ready for
this launch. If you are given the go ahead for the project, you will have three weeks for preproduction and then ten weeks for game development.
Activity 2
Once staffing has been established, learners need to look at the resources that will be
required for the project. Learners will need to look at the locations – studio etc – and
resources – computers, servers, graphics tablet, etc.
Learners will need to then think about whether these resources should be purchased by the
company, as they will be used again, or if they should be hired as they are only needed for a
short period of time.
Accordingly, instruct the learners that, in their pairs, they should research on the internet to
help them complete the following tasks:
1. Identify the locations that will be required for the Road Safety Computer Game project
2. For each location, explain what consent/releases will be required (if any)
3. Identify the resources that will be required for the project
4. For each of the resources, identify how it will be sourced i.e. purchased or rented/hired.
