Dear Parents and Carers
My School data
The 2014 My School data was made available for parents across the nation last Thursday. On the My School
website Chapman Primary School was identified as demonstrating above average NAPLAN gain compared
to schools with similar students. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA)
stated “This gain is deemed to be statistically significant and worthy of highlighting and acknowledgement”.
To identify your school as demonstrating this above average gain compared to schools with similar students and
to deem this statistically significant, ACARA employed a methodology that considered three key factors being:
The school’s overall gain compared to previous years;
The school’s gain compared to schools with similar students based on the Index of Community SocioEducational Advantage (ICSEA) level; and,
3. The school’s gain compared to other students at similar NAPLAN start points.
1.
2.
We wish to acknowledge these excellent school results and the collective success of our 2014 year 5 students
who have applied their learning and performed well in the NAPLAN tests last year. Chapman Primary students
achieved excellent growth in reading, persuasive writing and numeracy.
The school went through a validation process in 2014 by an independent panel and they noted our focus on
improving student performance in all aspects of school life had been achieved. They acknowledged the high
levels of overall satisfaction recorded by staff who had demonstrated consistent levels of satisfaction with
teaching, with support from the leadership, with expectations of student achievement, and with levels of
communication throughout the school. All of these are key inputs into achieving good student outcomes.
Since 2008 the school has shown gain for students who have progressed from year 3 to year 5 in NAPLAN
reading when compared to students at the same starting point and students at schools with a similar ICSEA
score. Our growth hasn’t always been as good as what occurred from 2012 to 2014 and we can attribute this to
having a stable leadership team who has had a planned focus on improving student outcomes.
In the past four years we have worked extremely diligently on:
 Aligning curriculum practices to inform teaching and assessment resulting in continuous improvements in
student learning outcomes
 Embedding a culture of collegial, reflective practice informed by evidence based research
 Establishing a shared vision of excellence reflecting innovative practices and aspirations for the future
 Providing preschool education in accordance with National Quality Standards (NQS) for Early Childhood
Care and Education
Our consistently low suspension numbers and high attendance rates also indicate our children are engaged and
focused on learning. Also contributing to these successes has been strong parental involvement, clear welfare
processes and whole school support programs.
Congratulations to our teachers, students and parent community for your efforts and commitment to supporting
learning and ensuring that Chapman Primary School is recognised for “Achieving Excellence Together”!
Director General’s Visit
Diane Joseph the ACT Director - General for Education & Training visited Chapman Primary to meet with
Anne, the staff and to visit our classes during learning time. During her visit she discussed key school
improvement strategies, student data sets and inquired how teachers know and cater for their student’s
identified needs. The following is her written feedback to Anne after her visit to Chapman Primary.
“Dear Anne
Thank you for your intellectually stimulating visit to Chapman PS. I very much enjoyed interacting with your
leadership team and hearing how you are ensuring progress for all your students and all your staff every day.
The classrooms looked terrific, a real sense of excitement for learning and a place clearly where students, and
teachers, want to be.
A thriving school – well done and thank you.”
P&C
Chapman Primary greatly appreciates and values the enormous contribution of our P&C committee members
each year. We would especially like to acknowledge and say a huge “THANK YOU” to Jo Forster for her
personal efforts, energy and continuous enthusiasm that she has invested into her P&C roles over the last 5
years. Jo has been an effective leader as the P&C President managing to encourage wide support from her
fellow committee members and the wider school community. We also thank all the retiring committee members
for their contributions towards supporting the many fundraising and community building events at CPS that
provide our students and families with diverse opportunities to contribute and participate. Welcome to our new
2015 P&C committee members and we look forward to working together on many more exciting shared
ventures. The names of the new committee members are featured later in this Communicator.
Family Picnic
It was lovely to see so many families at our ‘Welcome Picnic’ on Thursday 26th February. Parents who attended
enjoyed the opportunity to sit and relax with other families, catch up on holiday news and meet new families in
their children’s 2015 classes. The children and some parents also enjoyed participating in some of the sporting
activities that were available during the evening!
Parent Teacher Partnerships
In Week 8 parents and carers are invited to make an appointment with their child’s class teacher. This is to
allow teachers, students and parents to discuss the learning that has occurred to date this year. This
parent/teacher interview (K & Yr 1) is an opportunity to discuss how your child has settled into their new class,
early progress and areas to focus on in the future. At the ‘Three Way Conference’ (Yrs 2-6) involving teacher,
parent & student, there is a wonderful opportunity for children to share their understandings and knowledge and
to discuss their personal goals for semester one.
All students received the note about the scheduled Week 8 Interviews or Three Way Conferences yesterday.
Parents and carers are asked to complete the tear off slip on this note with their preferred times and return it to
the class teacher so that 10 minute timeslots can be allocated for families.
Please keep your eyes open for a notice about a Parent Survey that will be sent out soon! We want to hear your
suggestions of what you like about parent involvement at CPS and how we can broaden our opportunities for
parents to be authentically involved in your child’s learning.
Road Rules and Student Safety
We are urging all families to discuss road rules and reinforce road safety messages with their children. We have
had three reported ‘near misses’ involving students from CPS. Two of these incidents involved children riding
bikes and crossing the road in front of moving cars (not watching or using underpasses) and another child riding
a skateboard across the pedestrian crossing without looking. Your children’s safety is our primary concern as
they come to school, during school and as they make their way home from school. Please help us reinforce ‘age
appropriate’ road rules and safety practices by talking about this at home and modelling correct road crossing
behaviours with your child/ren.
We also ask parents and carers to please not stand, linger and talk on the footpath area on either side of the road
directly in line with the pedestrian crossing. A very distressed driver has made us aware of how difficult it is for
drivers to work out when children & adults are actually ready to walk out onto the crossing versus standing in a
group having a friendly chat. Children waiting for their parents are encouraged to remain inside the school
fence not near the entry and exit points of the cross walk.
We wish our year 5/6 students well as they leave for camp next Wednesday at Borambola!
Kind Regards
Kathy & Staff

A reminder to all families that Chapman Primary School is strictly a smoke free zone, this includes all
grounds and play equipment. We thank you for your cooperation.
Preschool
We have had another busy time at preschool investigating creatures that lived in the sea and discovering how to
make new colours from red, yellow and blue. We start our day with exercises to get our bodies moving and we
are also finding out about the names of different parts of our body. We know that our heart is pumping blood
around our body and it goes faster when we are exercising. We are getting to know our friends at preschool,
learning their names and enjoying making new friends as
well. We are challenging ourselves with more difficult gross
motor planning when we do the obstacle course and feeling
very proud when we find out we can do something that
looked very tricky.
It was lovely to see so many families at our welcome picnic
and the children enjoyed meeting their friends from the
other classes.
The Preschool Team
Kindergarten - The Garden
In the past 2 weeks we have begun exploring letter names and sounds. The children are
all enthusiastic about their learning and are having a go at new concepts. You can help
your child by pointing out simple sounds that you can hear in words, such as ‘S’, as you
share stories or playing games such as I-spy at home. We have also begun our new
Inquiry unit “You, me and Family” and are enjoying getting to know more about
ourselves and each other.
We really appreciate the effort families have been putting in at home in preparing news about our class ‘pets’
and learning the golden words. This is helping your child’s confidence in follow up activities at school.
You will have received a note on Tuesday in regard to parent/teacher interviews in week 8. Interviews are on
a ‘first in’ basis so please ensure that you return notes quickly to get your desired time.
Kindy Teachers,
Michelle May, Tessa van der Hoek, Priscilla Reyenga and Kristy Messenger
Year 1 - Where the Forest Meets the Sea
We started our ‘How can we keep ourselves healthy?’ inquiry with a shopping spree last week! The teachers set
up a temporary grocery store in the classroom and students were asked to buy some food items for their family.
There were some very interesting choices with some families possibly only eating donuts and chocolates for a
week. Following this activity we talked with the students about why some items were chosen and have begun
asking questions about which foods are healthy. We would love it if there were any dentists, nurses, doctors or
nutritionists in the community who could come and speak to us and help answer some of our questions. If you
know of someone who is available, please contact your child’s teacher so we can organise a time.
Maths groups have also started on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. We have been working on skip
counting and number identification. Please ask your child to share some of the games they have been playing.
We are also keen to have parents assist with reading in the morning. If you are available please contact your
child’s teacher.
Prue Anderson, Tegan Kennedy, Laura Poultney and Helen Tranter
Year 2 – Animalia
We can hardly believe that we are over half way through term 1 already!
Our reading, maths, and word study groups are well underway across all four classes and the children are doing
very well at getting themselves to their classes quickly. Thank you to all of the parents and volunteers that have
been helping us with our morning Word Study groups. The children are getting a lot quicker at organising
themselves for these sessions first thing in the morning. It has been wonderful to have your continued support.
We were very impressed to see the amount of homework that came back completed for our first round of
homework so well done to all the children. It was great to hear that so many of them enjoyed the tasks.
We have commenced visual arts rotations where each class is completing an artist study and artwork using their
techniques. The artists are Claude Monet, Albert Namatjira, Pablo Picasso and Sally Morgan. Last week classes
rotated to a new teacher and artist. You will be able to see some of this fantastic art around our rooms very
soon!
We are looking forward to seeing families at our Year 2 assembly this week.
Regards,
Melina Clark (Daring Dragons), Sharon Hickey (Ingenious Iguanas), Lee Hodges (Zany Zebras), Bek Lane
(Logical Lions) and Kate Pottenger (LSA)
Year 3 – The Tree House
II
Last week the year three students and teachers enjoyed their excursion to the National Capital Exhibition
Centre. Students explored the centre and learnt many interesting facts about how and when Canberra was
created, who Sir Walter Burley Griffin was and the meaning of Canberra .
Mystery Reader
Calling all parents/ grandparents who would like volunteer for Mystery Reader in Year 3. Mystery Reader
occurs each Friday morning from 8.50 to 9 in the Year 3 unit. You can choose a chapter of a favourite book or
a family favourite picture book. We are seeking volunteers for term 2 from the 1st May to the 3rd July. Please
contact your child’s teacher to book in.
Parent Helpers
If you are interested in helping in Year 3 we need a few parent volunteers on Monday and Tuesday mornings
from 8.50 to 9.15 to help with spelling matrix.
Homework
Homework is due next week. We are looking forward to another display of wonderful work.
Notes
Please return your 3 way interview requests as soon as possible as these occur in week 8.
Thanks
Lauren Daniel, Mark Shiels, Fiona O’Hare and Trish Foster
Year 4 – The Land Of Oz
The half-way point of the term has passed and we are delighted with the excellent work ethic and never give up
attitude displayed by our Year 4 students. Last week we started our History unit, ‘Exploring Australia’s Past’
and have engaged in reading, talking and writing about what life was like in Australia before colonisation.
We’re very excited about Captain Lister (a.k.a. Year 4 parent, Mark Cooper) coming in to present two very
engaging and interactive information sessions to us over the next few weeks.
Year 4 students have been consolidating their knowledge of place value, reading the time on an analogue clock
and converting between units of time during Maths lessons. We encourage you to involve your child in any
incidental clock reading opportunities that arise during routines at home to support their learning of this
important skill. We are impressed with the number of Year 4 students who are regularly logging into
Mathletics at home – keep up the good work!
Three-way interview notes have been sent home this week. This is a valuable opportunity for you to engage
with your child and their teacher about your child’s learning. Please return the completed note to your child’s
teacher as soon as possible as appointment times are filling up quickly. We look forward to seeing you in
Week 8!
Best Regards,
Fiona Duncan, Sheridan Brill and Paul Campbell
Year 5/6 - Superheroes
Our Superheroes are getting excited in anticipation of Camp Borambola next week. Some of the exciting
activities students will be doing include rock climbing, BMX course and archery. We have been talking to
students about what they need to bring to camp. Please talk to your child about the packing list and pack
together. Students need to have their lunch and recess, a full water bottle and a broad brim hat in a backpack for
the first day. Make sure that your child’s belongings are clearly labelled.
The homework submitted by our Superheroes was once again of a high standard. We were very impressed with
the ANZAC essays submitted by students. This current, shorter edition on homework will be due Tuesday 17th
March due to camp. We are looking forward to hearing some number facts about the distance to camp as we
make our way to Borambola on Wednesday.
The Year 5/6 team.
Woolworths Domino Stars
If you have any spare ‘Domino Stars’ (current promotion from Woolworths
supermarket), we would love to have them at school as they are a great resource for
Maths lessons for Kindergarten - Year 6. A collection box can be found in the front
office. Some examples of uses of the cards are;










Find the missing numbers in forwards or backwards number sequences e.g. 25, __ , 27, 28, ___, 30
Adding /subtracting randomly drawn dominoes and then explaining the strategy used to find the answer
eg. 25+26= double 25+1, 41-17= (40-16)=(40-10-6)=24 or total dots on domino to do the same
Multiplying randomly drawn dominoes (domino number or total dots)
Sorting into doubles, consecutive numbers, pairs to ten, totals etc
Matching dot patterns (traditional dominoes)
Expressing as fractions eg 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5, 5/5
Finding equivalent fractions eg 1/3 = 2/6
Repeated addition of dot patterns – choose 5 dominoes – who has the highest/lowest total?
Use dots to represent two digit numbers and record and order these eg 66, 52, 45, 31
Subtraction – smaller number from the larger number
Excursion Medical Permission
It is the responsibility of the parent to notify the school of any medical issues and/or medications that their
child is taking. All students attending an excursion must have a current Excursion Medical Permission note
completed. If the information that you provided on your child’s 2015 Excursion Medical Information form has
changed since the beginning of this year (eg medications) please complete a new form for your child prior to
this excursion.
The Excursion Medical form is available from the school website or at the front office.
Harmony Day is held every year to coincide with the United Nations
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The message of
Harmony Day is everyone belongs. It’s a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity –
a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.
We are celebrating Harmony Day at Chapman Primary School on Thursday 19
March 2015. Students are being asked to wear either orange or traditional
dress/costume from another country.
In addition, we would like to organise for one or two parents to visit their
child’s class on the day and share something that represents their cultural background with the students. You
might like to show some interesting objects/artefacts, teach the children a song/dance or share some pre-made
food e.g.- spring rolls, sushi, damper etc. Please keep in mind we have children with severe allergies to nuts
and eggs. If you are interested in sharing on the day or have any questions please ring the school on 62057300
and ask for Kirsten Waldron or you can email [email protected]

CUPCAKE STALL
THURSDAY, WEEK 10
9 APRIL 2015
Cup cakes 50c or $1 each
Plates of cupcakes $5
from 2:30pm outside the hall
Students can buy one cupcake when they attend the stall with
their class and additional cupcakes in the first half of lunch.
Proceeds will be donated to Dyslexia SPELD ACT.
The P&C needs you to donate cupcakes!
Drop them at the hall from 8.30am with a list of ingredients.
Last year we sold them all, so please bring as many as you can!
We especially need cupcakes that cater for special dietary needs
(eg gluten free, egg free, dairy free and remember: NO NUTS).
Entries in the SRC decorating competition should be delivered to
Mr Shiels before school
We also need parents to help on the day.
Contact [email protected] if you can help.
