Virginia’s 7-4 win over Florida State in 12 innings sends Virginia to 47-10 on the season and 4-0 in extra innings.
The 47 wins ties the 2006 team for fourth place on Virginia’s all-time wins list.
It is Virginia’s 20th comeback win this year. It is also the Cavaliers’ eighth comeback from three runs or more down;
six have come in the sixth inning or later.
Kenny Towns ended the game with a three-run, walkoff home run. Jared King had Virginia’s last walkoff home run,
March 19, 2011, also against Florida State
Freshman Joe McCarthy homered for Virginia in the third inning, making him the first Virginia freshman to hit a
home run in the ACC Championship since Dan Grovatt, against Duke on May 23, 2009.
Virginia won all three regular-season games against Florida State this season, outscoring the Seminoles 16-4.
Florida State now has a seven-game ACC Championship losing streak, including winless outings in pool play the
last two seasons. Three of those losses were by one run, while two others came by way of walkoff home runs. The
loss gives the Seminoles its first four-game losing streak of the season.
Florida State outfielder Josh Delph made his first start since April 2. Delph had been sidelined with
meningoencephalitis. He scored a run and drove in another.
Florida State’s D.J. Stewart had two hits against the Cavaliers and ends the tournament with eight hits. Florida
State’s Matt Diaz holds the ACC Tournament record of 14, set in 1998. That was in five games under the old
double-elimination format.
Virginia reliever Kyle Crockett established a season-high with six strikeouts. The Virginia closer fanned eight against
Radford last season. Crockett worked 4.0 innings, one-third of an inning short of his season-best.
