Overview
Materials
This course is taught stressing solving word problems and the relevance of
Required:
mathematics to the world outside the classroom, particularly to model
scientific phenomena. The aim of this course is to develop the two
-
mathematical competencies outlined below.
Competencies
•
Competency 1: How to solve a situational problem (30%)

Competency 2: Use of mathematical reasoning (70%)

Homework
Homework will be given on a daily basis. Students are expected to put in a
full amount of effort in trying to complete their homework. Students will
receive approximately 1 hour of homework per night. Homework should be
completed on loose leaf and in pencil, and students must show all work for
full credit. Homework assignments will be checked regularly and collected
periodically as part of their term mark.
Engrade
Engrade, NSA’s online gradebook, is an extremely valuable tool for students
and parents. All math assignments, including in-class work, homework, tests
and quizzes, will be posted on the Engrade calendar on the weekly plan.
Students and parents are encouraged to check Engrade regularly to keep
track of the progression of the class, to check grades and to be aware of
upcoming tests and quizzes.

Math Help Services
The online platform Math Help Services will be an integral part of the
curriculum in addition to the textbooks and workbook. Students can access
video tutorials and practice problems on this website, and homework
assignments will frequently be online as well. Students are encouraged to
make ample use of this resource and must complete any assignments given
on this website. A training session will be held at the start of the year for all
students.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated on a regular basis through homework and in-class
work. Generally, each unit will consist of a mid-unit quiz and as well as a
test at the end of the unit.
There will be two formal exams during the year; they will be held in January
and June. The June Competency 2 exam will be a uniform examination from
the Ministère de l’éducation, du loisir et du sport and will count for 50% of
the final mark in that competency.
Plagiarism
Please note that any form of plagiarism or cheating will result in a grade of
zero on the test or assignment, and a letter from the teacher will be placed in
your file. A repeated offence may lead to more serious consequences.
