Basketball Update This year’s basketball season is now in full swing and both of the Ridgeview teams competing in FVSD league have played several games. Ridgeview students have worked hard and are learning so much as they play teams that have students from grades 7-9. Great job to our Husky athletes and coaches. Principal Absence Parents, please note that from January 17-20, I (Mr. Fehr) will be away from school in an effort to support Fort Vermilion School Division teacher recruitment. It is during times like these that efforts are put in to find quality teachers that would be good fits for FVSD schools (if teachers are needed for the next school year). Should you as parents have any school related questions or concerns during this time, please feel free to call Ridgeview School and ask to speak to Ridgeview’s acting principal. Ridgeview also has a grade 6 team that practices Fridays in a less competitive environment. This team will play several games with teams from other schools, however the focus is mostly on skill development and positive relationships. Parents, if you have an opportunity to come out and cheer any of the Ridgeview Huskies teams on, it would be appreciated. If you have not yet watched a game, you might be surprised at the skill level of RCS students! We Care Assembly Parents, as you may be aware, specific classes (guided by their teacher) are leading the We Care Assemblies this year at Ridgeview. This is new for Ridgeview this year and in the assemblies already completed this year, students have done a fantastic job! This month’s assembly will take place on Friday, January 13 and it will be lead by the 7B and 7C classes. As always, parents are welcome to attend. Accountability Pillar Surveys Alberta Education will be conducting their annual Accountability Pillar Surveys from early January until the end of February of 2017. Parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey mailed to their homes directly from Alberta Education. Because this information assists us in creating our annual School Improvement Plan it would be greatly appreciated if you could take the time to complete the survey if you receive it in the mail!! What is an Accountability Pillar Survey? Accountability Pillar Surveys are surveys that are sent out by the Alberta Government. Parents are provided with an opportunity to give feedback on their child’s school in specific areas. All surveys remain anonymous and parents that complete the survey are asked to respond honestly based upon the experiences they have had at their child’s school. The survey tools are designed to find out how satisfied parents, teachers and students are in the following areas: i. Safe and Caring School Environment ii. Access to a Broad Program of Studies iii. Educational Quality iv. Student Preparation for the World of Work v. Building Citizenship in Students vi. Level of Parental Involvement in Child’s Education vii. School Improvement Processes This week, in an effort to provide specific school information for parents so that surveys can be completed knowledgeably, we will focus on Student Preparation for the World of Work. Please see page 3 Ridgeview Central School January 10, 2017 Husky Headlines Accountability Pillar Surveys This Week’s Focus= Student Preparation for the World of Work The Accountability Pillar surveys issued by Alberta Education attempt to encompass the concept of Work Preparation through the following question: Are students taught attitudes and behaviours that will make them successful at work when they leave school? At Ridgeview, we emphasize appropriate work related behaviours in the following ways: School Is a Student’s Place of Work– Students are expected to try their best when completing their work at Ridgeview. Determined teacher efforts to expect that school work be completed ensures that students understand school is their place of employment until they reach the work force. Punctuality– Students are expected to be on time for classes and they are expected to complete all of their class work. Ridgeview continues to implement an Alternatives To Zero Policy that uses a step by step approach to ensure school work is completed and handed in to teachers. As a very last resort, a zero may be given but not until steps of the policy have been attempted first. We are trying to prepare students for real life expectations! School Work First Priority– Students on sports teams are made aware that school work must be the first priority. If school responsibilities are not met, students at Ridgeview are not allowed to play on sports teams. We feel this is an important life lesson that also supports our strong commitment to preparing students for the world of work. Cooperation-This is an emphasis of all Physical Education teachers and is one of the general outcomes of the Physical Education Program. In addition to Physical Education, cooperation is encouraged through daily classroom activities, our We Care Program and the Care in Action Program. Cooperation is a necessary skill in the everyday work place which is why we expect Ridgeview students to demonstrate cooperation each day! Student Leadership-As you are aware, student leadership is an important school-wide focus at Ridgeview and students have been doing amazing things! Students have already played important leadership roles in leading assemblies, mentoring (helping and guiding) students at younger grade levels with academics and special projects, helping at Sandhills School, assisting with Operation Christmas Child, digging and processing beats for Peace Country Gleaners, cleaning school facilities and raising money to help support those affected by cancer. These are only a few of the many ways that students have demonstrated leadership in their school and community. Ridgeview students will be our community leaders in the future so it is important that they are provided with opportunities to develop leadership skills at a young age. Ridgeview Greenhouses– Ridgeview’s greenhouse initiative is preparing students for the world of work. Grade 7 students involved in the construction option are building two greenhouses this year that will be used for plant growth and sales at the end of this school year. Construction, sales, business promotion, and plant growth are all valuable practical skills for Ridgeview students. It is very important for you as parents to be aware of what is being done at your child’s school before you complete the Accountability Pillar Surveys. Please know that we are making every effort to prepare your child for the world of work so that he/she can develop into a productive member of this community. Parents, you are welcome to speak to me at any time if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the survey when you receive it in the mail. Sincerely, Mr. C. Fehr
