In this piece, tied with words as well as a picture, we get not only the powerful visuals with the image of information but also we can visualize what information would look like if it where laced into a network of stocking, depicting the endless amount of information. In our first reading, McLuhan has a lot of images that include many different phrases and statements that explain the image like cheese and crackers. Showing the reader that there are many different emotions as well as different mindsets that media brings us. This picture explains the words shown to us through media. Not everything we see is meaningless text, but must be seen with different levels of meaning and emotion. Media has many different levels of this and are there to paint a picture for us in our minds. Media affects everyone who reads or gazes at it. Weather the image that we perceive has a good or bad message; it usually tends to have an impact on its viewers. This girl sees a perfect image, wanting to be perfect with it. This is an example of how any type of media can affect a person emotionally, physically and mentally. “Most people find it difficult to understand purely verbal concepts. They suspect the ear; they don't trust it. In general we feel more secure when things are visible, when we can "see for ourselves." “. (McLuhan, 63) With habits such as smoking, people know it’s unhealthy. People know it can kill them, we hear statements from others about how they should stop all the time. They never seem to pay attention. Media catches this non-verbal image but also puts it into perspective, in this picture we see not only the verbal/nonverbal message, but also the image and what comes with smoking, what can happen and what can come with this habit. This quote from our reading, “The Medium Is The Message”, we read about how people react to verbal’s, Sounds, and visual things. This picture above, in my opinion, hits smoking habits perfectly; people are told to quit smoking all the time, but when they see a picture involving smoking and the end result, it may definitely change their view. We are able to catch this image and understand it, even without the words, and that is a powerful thing. This is a picture that has no text, yet a picture that holds many emotions. Most of these emotions are targeted towards drinking and driving. There is no text needed for us to realize this is about alcohol and driving intoxicated. A very unique way for a type of media that shows us a picture that holds a thousand meaningful words that is wordless. Yet another image that has no text, but still holds many emotions and visuals throughout the picture. Another way media can bring our attention to distractions like phone use while driving.
