introduction

INTRODUCTION
The Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology
(NIAB), an establishment of Pakistan Atomic
Energy Commission (PAEC), is striving for
agricultural development in Pakistan by
enhancing yield of crops along with food
safety. NIAB is well equipped with manpower of
73 scientists, 39 of them are Ph. D holders. NIAB
has close relationship with other establishments
of PAEC and various institutions involved in
R&D activities at home and abroad.
Agricultural crops are vulnerable to infestation by
a range of insect pests through out the year. To
control these pests there has been a complete
reliance on insecticides that has created many
problems. Development of resistance in insects,
residues of insecticides and aflatoxins in food are
the major concerns to cope with. Integrated Pest
Management (IPM) has got increasing attention
as a potential mean of ameliorating crop losses
while reducing reliance on insecticides, thereby
enhancing the long term sustainability of agroecosystem. IPM integrates multiple strategies that
cover mainly host plant resistance, cultural
control, biological control and insecticide
resistance management.
Many diseases are reducing the production of
crops worldwide. Among these viral diseases are
spreading at an alarming pace. Disease
management strategies include the use of cultural
practices, use of fungicides & insecticides to
control
insects
serving
as
vectors,
resistant/tolerant varieties and combination of
compatible methods. Resistant varieties offer
long-term, economical and environment safe
solution. Continuous studies on characterization
of virulent race/strains of pathogens and
screening of pathogens free germplasm are
inevitable to identify resistance.
Plant Protection Division (PPD) consists of
research groups to manage insect pests and
diseases. Utilizing the expertise of scientists and
the facilities for plant protection, NIAB is going
to conduct three days national workshop. This
workshop will acquaint students, teachers,
industrialists and researchers from private and
public sectors with theoretical and practical
aspects of insect pests and disease management.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
a) Maintenance of quality and quantity
standards in colonization of insects and
plant pathogens
