Prayer Points
These prayer points can be used as a guideline for the Government Prayer Sunday at your Church.
1) Let us first ask God to prepare our hearts to be filled with love and compassion for our leaders so
that our prayers and petitions will not be compared to “a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal”.
1 Corinthians 13:1-2
2) Let us be thankful for our democracy and the fundamental freedoms that Section 2 of the Canadian
Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees for all Canadians.
3) Let us pray for our elected leaders to be people of personal integrity so that we can live in a country
of righteousness and justice, the foundational values of God’s throne. Psalm 89:14
In Psalm 15, David describes the characteristics of such leaders, those dwelling on God’s Holy Hill.
So let us pray that our leaders be those who:
Walk blamelessly and humbly
Do what is right and pursue justice and fairness
Keep promises even at personal cost
Are wise and discerning in their financial transactions
Manifest a wholeness of character, including kindness, compassion, mercy and gentleness
Speak the truth from their hearts with sincerity and hate hypocrisy
Refuse to participate in insulting remarks or damaging their friends/colleagues’ reputation
Do not slander nor gossip
Do no evil to their neighbors
Do not take advantage of the innocent
Honor those who fear the Lord
For they shall never be moved.
Additional prayer points for our leaders:
 Pray that they will be men and women of integrity and courage to stand up for what is right.
Proverbs 29:27
 That they would be known for their humility, which invites God’s great grace and protects them
from pride.
James 4:6
 For wise and godly counselors to help our leaders reach their full potential.
Proverbs 11:14
 That the motives behind any decision would not feed selfish ambition but will be for the good of
the whole nation.
Proverbs 20:28
 That they would be encouraged to live a lifestyle that promotes good health and endurance.
1 Corinthians 9:24
 May they pursue meaningful time with their family, which brings stability at home and at work.
Psalm 128
 That there would be a culture of co-operation and honour within all parties.
Micah 6:8
4) Finally, let us ask God to lead us by His Spirit on how to practically, effectively and faithfully serve
our society alongside our Government and elected leaders.
“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see,
so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 5:16
