Market Update: Week of May 29, 2017 Local: Delicious local strawberries are now in season, we are expected to start with local lettuces next week, as well as local zucchini! Good things grow in Ontario: Apples Asparagus Bean Sprouts Cabbage – Green & Red Carrots Celery Root Cucumbers Fiddleheads Mini Eggplants Mushrooms Onions – Cooking Peppers – Red, Yellow, Orange Rhubarb Strawberries Tomatoes - HH Fruit Apples No major changes this week, although some varieties will see some price increases. We have changed to Chilean Royal Gala’s due to the increasing price of U.S. Available Varieties: Ontario Nova Scotia USA Empire Ambrosia Red Delicious Red Delicious Fuji Royal Gala Royal Gala (prices up) Granny Smith (prices up) New Zealand JAZZ Honeycrisp Kanzi Pink Lady Golden Delicious Pears Good volumes on Pears out of South Africa and Argentina with promotional pricing available. Available varieties: Washington: Anjou, Red & Green - South Africa: Bosc, Forelle (promote) South America Abate (Argentina),Packham Pomegranates No major changes this week. We are expecting our final two containers to arrive over the next week or so. Our fruit is fresh and the prices are very competitive. Ask us for opportunities! Stone fruit Sizing is very nice and eating quality is outstanding on Apricots out of California. We have both White and Yellow Nectarines available now in a full run of sizes. Pricing will be very aggressive as the weather improves in California. The Peach crop from Georgia this year is very short. They had bad weather when the trees were in bloom, and they lost most of the crop. California fruit is available but demand is exceeding supply at this point. We expect this to ease over the coming weeks. Also available are Cherries. They are expensive but the quality is nice. 1 Citrus Oranges California Oranges continue to climb in price and are expected to remain strong going forward. Looks like we will be lucky to get through May with fruit. We are currently carrying oranges from Spain as South Africa is off to a slow start and the shortage of Oranges could be worse than expected. We are seeing extreme issues in loading vessels in South Africa, fruit is also very short. The US crop will be on final floor counts next week and we will likely be collecting scraps. June will be a tough month and the pipeline will be cleaned up quickly. Demand will exceed supply. Juice Oranges Prices will be up again for next week as we get “storage” fruit in from Florida. Grapefruit We are strictly into South African fruit now. While we are currently meeting the demands of the business, this market is firm and we could see a gap in July if fruit doesn’t make color (same as last year). You should try and stay ahead on your purchasing . Clementines Gold Nuggets are available now and they are outstanding! Lemons The California Lemon market is very strong, and their prices won’t fly in this market now with Spanish Lemons in house. This market may be short and I would recommend customers to keep ahead on their purchases for the next 4-6 weeks. Limes Supplies are steady and the market is stable. No changes expected. Berries Blackberries California fruit has started this week; prices are stable and the quality is very good. Raspberries The market has shortened up a bit but we expect no major changes in price for next week. Ask about our different pack sizes including 6x12oz, 12x6oz and Organic Raspberries. Also available are Golden Raspberries from Driscoll's. Strawberries The Strawberry market remains steady and pricing is firm. The quality is excellent and we have fresh arrivals daily. Ontario Strawberries start this week! Blueberries Crops are spread out as usual, which will translate to a steady market throughout the summer. California fruit is available now in small quantities and Jersey is slated to start on June 15th. Ask your sales person for promotional pricing for the long weekend, we will have good ad opportunities available! Vine and Tropical Grapes Volumes have picked up in Mexico bringing us more availability on all varieties. A fresh arrival of Chilean Red and Green Grapes are available now as well as Red Globe and Black Seedless. Pineapples The market is stable and prices are down. No changes expected this week. Mangoes Mexican Mangoes continue this week, both Tommy and Ataulfo varieties. Bananas Prices are now stable as supply and demand are back in line. Papaya We continue with Brazilian Papaya by air and Formosa varieties this week; no market change. 2 Avocados New crop Mexican Avocados are slowly starting in the Jalisco area. Prices remain stable. We are currently carrying Peru ad Mexican Avocados. Watermelon Steady supplies coming out of both Florida and Texas and the pricing has come off, but only slightly. Cantaloupes California Cantaloupes are available now. Pricing looks like it will be up slightly from where it’s been but the quality is excellent. Honeydew We continue this week with Mexican Honeydew; no changes expected. Kiwi We will continue with Chilean Kiwi with fresh arrivals of both Green and Gold fruit. New Zealand Kiwi fruit will be here by mid-week, but we expect prices to be high and availability to be limited as the season starts. Vegetables Broccoli The market is easing off and supplies have started to pick up. There are some promotional opportunities available for next week; speak to your sales person! Cauliflower The market is a little stronger but supplies remains steady. Celery The market continues to be very strong and supplies will be limited for another 2 weeks. We have brought in product from Spain to cover orders. Zucchini The market on Zucchini is very strong as Mexico and Florida has finished for the year and Georgia and Jersey are just starting up. Supplies will be limited for a few weeks. Local Zucchini starting next week! Corn BBQ season is upon us and we are seeing good supplies out of Florida with Georgia crop only 10 days away. Promote! Eggplant Supplies will be very limited for the next few weeks as Mexico winds down and Florida has finished for the season. No changes expected until Georgia starts in mid-June. Asparagus Local Asparagus has begun but supplies are very limited. We have some product coming in from Quebec to help with demand; the quality has been very nice. Beans Now available out of both Carolina and Georgia; promote! Hot House Peppers No changes this week on all Greenhouse Peppers. The quality is very good on Red and prices are steady. Yellow and Orange varieties are promotable this week. Bushel Peppers are also available. Seedless Cucumbers No major changes expected this week; continue to promote local Cucumbers! Lettuce Iceberg Lettuce Promotional pricing continues this week. Ask your sales person for opportunities! Romaine & Romaine Hearts Romaine Lettuce is promotable next week; take advantage while you can. Romaine Hearts are a little strong but the quality remains very good. 3 Red & Green Leaf Lettuce All Leaf items are very promotable this week as supplies have increased in California and Jersey has started. Promote! We are about 1 weeks away from local Red and Green Leaf; stay tuned! Tomatoes Hot House & Cluster Tomatoes Prices on Hot House Tomatoes has started to climb this week with Florida and Mexico product winding down. The quality remains very good but expect the market to continue to increase. Cluster Tomatoes remain steady and very promotable. Quality is outstanding; ask your sales person for promotional pricing! Field Tomatoes Field Tomatoes are extremely short and product is becoming very difficult to get out of Florida. Quality is only air at best. We expect California to start by the first week of July. Roma Tomatoes California Roma’s are available now. The market is steady and the quality is very nice. Grape/Cherry Tomatoes All Ontario product. Pricing is steady with no changes expected. Onions, Carrots, Potatoes Cooking Onions The market continues to strengthen and prices will go up this week as local product comes to an end. Quantities are limited. Spanish Onions U.S. new crop Colossal and Jumbo Spanish Onions are available now; the quality is very nice. Washington storage Onions are still available and less expensive. Red Onions We have new crop of jumbo red onions from California. The price will be steady. Vidalia Onions A BBQ staple! Sweet Vidalia Onions are available now from Georgia. The quality is excellent and pricing is at the lowest we've seen them in many years. Carrots We have some U.S. and Mexican Jumbo Carrots in stock now along with a limited supply of local product. Potatoes We have some PEI Yellow Fleshed, Red and Russet Potatoes here to supplement the Ontario product. We have transitioned to California Ruby Red, Avalanche White and Yellow Potatoes. The quality is excellent; promote!
