Young Ambassadors in
England
The Young Ambassadors from the
Wolsingham School in Durham have
been working very hard since
attending the Young Ambassador
Conference at York Race Course in
September.
To educate the students in their
community about the Olympic and
Paralympic Games, the Young
Ambassadors have created visual
displays, including an Olympic Board
using resources from the Get Set
website.
The London 2012 Get Ahead School
Leavers’ Programme is a fantastic
opportunity to secure a job on one of
the most exciting projects. Successful
applicants will spend a year meeting
the faces of the people behind the
Games and learning the ropes of what
it takes to organise such an event. A
range of business administration roles
are on offer in departments such as
Technology, Human Resources,
Games Services and Games
Operations. As well as learning new
skills, from world class people, you will
study with a local college to gain a
recognised NVQ qualification.

They have used changes to their
school house system to their
advantage, with each house
representing one of the Olympic
Rings.
At the end of the year, they hope to
hold a ‘mini Olympics’, with an
opening and closing ceremony and a
wide range of different sports events.
The Young Ambassadors plan to
involve all the departments across the
school in this event, with crosscurricular tasks. For example, they are
going to ask; the art department to
make the banners, English to write
articles for the school newsletter, ICT
to create posters and Maths to be in
charge of scoring.

around the following areas;

Young Ambassadors as possible for
this resource, so please send any

What is it like to be on the
School Leavers’
Programme?
Peter Barron a Platinum Young

“During the summer of 2010 I was
unsure whether to proceed with the
‘same old’ university path and
therefore I made the decision that you
can delay higher education but
delaying the Games is not an option. If
I wanted to be a part of the Games in
some capacity, now was the time to
have a go.
I have learnt a range of skills
including; how to conduct myself
professionally in a business
environment, when to listen and when
to speak up and I have also become
more confident at making my own
decisions.
Overall, I have met some amazing
individuals and look forward to work
every day because I know I will meet
yet another inspiring colleague. If you
work hard you will certainly enjoy
yourself here.”
Paralympic Events
Don’t forget we still want to hear from
you if you have held or plan to hold
any events or initiatives which are
specifically about the Paralympic
Values and/or Paralympic sport.
