Men’s Tennis Picks Up First Win, Softball
Earns Conference Victory
College of the Desert men’s tennis picked up their first win of the season
last Tuesday, while softball earned a convincing Foothill Conference win on
Wednesday.

Baseball
Previous week: 0-3
College of the Desert baseball dropped three Foothill Conference matchups last week,
falling to Barstow (12-5) on Tuesday, Cerro Coso (6-2) on Friday and Chaffey (9-5)
on Saturday.
In their Saturday loss at Chaffey, the Roadrunners gained an early advantage in the
second inning when they plated three runs. Sophomore Luc Powers-Hubbard drove in
two with a triple, then scored the third run on a single by freshman Isaiah Kinder.
Sophomore Tanner Olthoff and freshman Travis Tanaka each collected an RBI, as
well.
Baseball travels to Victor Valley Tuesday afternoon for a 2 p.m. Foothill Conference
matchup.

Softball
Previous week: 1-0
College of the Desert softball picked up their first conference win of the season, as
they defeated Victor Valley by a score of 12-2.
Sophomore Kalen Gopperton led the Lady Roadrunners with two hits and four RBIs,
while sophomore Taylor Stone went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomores Brianna Alcorn and Liz Moreno each knocked in two runs, while sophomore
Amanda Martinez walked three times and recorded one RBI.
Sophomore Yizel Nunez earned the win on the mound, allowing just two runs on eight
hits over her five innings of work.
Softball travels to Barstow on Wednesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. Foothill Conference
matchup.

Men’s Golf
Previous week: Third Place
College of the Desert men’s golf took third place out of 12 participants in the Riverside Invitational with a final team score of 377 at the Victoria Country Club. Reedley
College won the event, finishing with a team score of 375.
Sophomore Ryan Emery led the Roadrunners with a score of 71, while sophomore Michael Schaloum finished just behind him with a 72. Sophomores Michael Starbuck
and Kenzo Vlassaks shot a 75 and 77, respectively, with sophomore Carson Spooner
and freshman Nicolas Beeken adding 82s.
Men’s golf will compete next in the COD State Preview, which is set for Monday,
March 14 at the Desert Island Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
Women’s Tennis
Previous week: 0-1
College of the Desert women’s tennis suffered their first loss of the season, as they
were beaten 9-0 by conference foe, Cerritos.
Freshman Linda Guerzize lost a tough match for Lady Roadrunners in singles, falling
6-3, 6-7(4), 8-10. Sophomore Yu Yamada also battled through a difficult singles
match, coming up short in a 2-6, 2-6 final.
The pair of Guerzize and Yamada teamed up for the Lady Roadrunners in doubles,
falling 5-8 in their match against the Cerritos top pairing. Freshmen Lauren Joy and
Diana Cole (5-8), along with freshman Miyako Kinoshita and sophomore Karen Rodas
(4-8), turned in strong doubles performances, as well.
Women’s tennis will be back in action Thursday afternoon when they travel to Mt.
San Antonio for a 2 p.m. match.

Men’s Tennis
Previous week: 1-1
College of the Desert men’s tennis picked up their first win of the 2016 season, as
they defeated Victor Valley by a score of 8-1. They were then beaten on the road by
Cerritos, 9-0, later in the week.
In their win over Victor Valley, Julien Bettonville led the Roadrunners with a singles
victory of 6-1, 6-1. His victory was supplemented by singles wins from Levi Renteria
(6-0, 6-1) and Marcus Simon (6-2, 6-1).
On the doubles side, Bettonville and Renteria defeated their foes 8-0, while Diego Zamora teamed up with Simon to earn an 8-2 win.
Men’s tennis is back at home this week, as they host Mt. San Antonio at 2 p.m. on
Thursday afternoon.
