AGENDA
LIFE SKILLS AND RESILIENCE
PRE-DEPLOYMENT/PRE-MOBILIZATION AND
POST DEPLOYMENT 30 & 60 DAYS
Saturday
7:00-8:00
Registration (Music, Introductions & Welcome)
8:00-8:30
Introductions & Ball Toss – This name game will allow
participants to learn each other’s names and a few interesting facts
about each other. Participants will pass around a ball to learn
names of other participants. Once names have been established,
more balls will be added to the circle to make the task more difficult.
If participants already are familiar with one another, participants
will be asked to state their name and one fact. Participants will be
challenged to learn a fact about everyone.
8:30-8:45
Who Drew? – Each participant will draw something that represents him or
her. All drawings will be piled together for an activity that has participants
attempt to identify the illustrators of each drawing. This activity reinforces
team and relationship building. Discussion will focus on building
relationships and diversity.
8:45-9:15
Hoop It Up – Participants will challenge each other within their
teams to see how many Frisbees they can fly through the hula hoop.
The level of difficulty will progressively become harder as the
activity goes along. Discussion will focus on seeing the larger picture
while facing adversity in groups. The group will also discuss holding
team members accountable for achieving their goals.
9:15-9:45
Back to Back – Participants will find partners and lock arms with
their backs to each other. They will keep arms locked and sit on the
floor with their legs straight out. Together they will try to stand up
without unclasping arms. Then participants will do the same things
in groups of four, then groups of eight, until the whole group can do
it together. Discussion will focus on collaboration, incorporating
others viewpoints, and working to accomplish a difficult task.
9:45-10:00
BREAK
10:00-10:30
Frogger – Participants will be tasked to use teamwork and
communication to create an obstacle to safely maneuver their frog
back to its original habitat. Discussion will focus on teamwork and
communication strategies.
10:30-11:00
Chocolate River – Participants will work together to accomplish a
group task that involves cooperation and input from all group
members. This activity reinforces group communication and
cooperation skills built on in earlier activities. Discussion includes
emphasis on communication and cooperation among group members
before beginning a task.
11:00-11:20
Squiggle Stories – Participants will each be given a piece of paper
and will be told to draw a squiggle somewhere on their paper. The
papers will then be rotated and the new artist is told to continue
drawing on the squiggle to make it into a picture (given a theme).
The papers are rotated every 20-30 seconds and new artists
continue the picture. Then as a team, or small teams broken up,
participants must work together to develop a story using their
papers as a storyboard. The team(s) will share their story.
Discussion will focus on individual work and teamwork, as well as
communication in developing the story.
11:20-11:30
Wash hands for lunch
11:30- 12:30
LUNCH – With parents
12:30-1:00
Secret Maze/The Grid – Participants will work together to discover
the “safe” path through a grid maze. Each team member must
successfully navigate the maze using only the “safe” path. Discussion
will focus on teamwork and communication, how to consider and
eliminate options. The activity can also be used to demonstrate terrain
mapping and then connected to how to use all available research and
information when deciding on a path of action.
1:00-1:30
Criss-Cross – Participants will be split into teams. Each team will
occupy a corner of the room. The instructor will provide
participants with movements commands. When given these
commands the participants must perform the movement (i.e.

with creating a house design and bringing the design to life. They
will then have to ‘sell’ their house to the other participants.
Discussion will focus on collaboration and creativity.
Tanks – Participants will engage in a competitive activity where
pairs have to communicate by giving instruction in order to “win.”
Discussion will focus on communication and cooperation skills and
may relate to deployment/reintegration issues. This activity may be
done once early as a competition and then later as a follow-up
leading into discussion deployment issues.
2:30-2:45
BREAK/EVALUATIONS
2:45-3:15

is leading the outside participants in follow-the-leader actions.

3:15-3:45
3:45 – 4:00
Favorite Activity of the Day
Wrap-Up (Final Debrief)
Extra Activities:
1) Human Knot – Participants will work together to untangle the group from a human knot
created by clasping hands. The purpose of this activity is to challenge the participants to work
together as a team to accomplish a task where everyone’s actions impact the outcome.
Discussion will focus on communication, teamwork, the importance of listening to every team
member’s input, finding different approaches, and persevering until a solution is found.
2) Color By Number – Participants will work together to complete a relay dash to tag numbers in
order that are written on foam circles. This activity requires teamwork and communication to
complete the task. Discussion will focus on the importance of all individual’s roles on a team,
and the importance of exploring different problem-solving approaches to accomplish a task.
3) Squealer – Participants will use strategy to obtain a “captured” object from one individual.
Discussion will focus on honesty and integrity within competitive situations.
