LITTLE SHOOTERS DRILLS – WEEK 4 (Modified 11/15) 9:0010:15/11:30 (5 minutes) – INTRO. Of ASSISTING SCHOOL – Split into 6 groups 9:05-9:15/10:20-10:30/11:35-11:45 (10 -12 minutes) – BALL HANDLING DRILLS A. Half-Court Dribble - Sprint with Count-The-Fingers, jump-stop, pivot, pass to coach – dribble back. (Twice through) B. Zig-Zag/Player Defend – Keep same lines as before, but this time have a participant guard the dribbler (Make sure they use good defensive technique) Hands up, knees bent, slide and not cross-step, etc. C. Dribble Pivot Drill – Form 1 line under the basket, have 2 coaches near half-court about 15 ft. apart. Have the player dribble out to the first coach and pivot/spin while keeping their dribble on to the next coach, pivot/spin again and dribble back to the base-line. Hand the ball off to the next player and repeat. 9:15-9:25/10:30-10:40/11:45-11:55 (10 – 12 minutes) – PASSING A. Cut-Drill – Move the kids back to almost half court this week. Have one player play the guard with a ball and have 2 wing players line up on each side of them. Have the guard and wings run up together on somewhat of a fast-break with a coach defender in the middle. The coach should force the guard to pass one way or the other to a wing player. Have the wing player shoot the ball and all should try for the rebound on a miss. B. Hustle and Flow – (2-6th only) have equal players in 2 single file lines across from each other on each side of the lane. Only one line should have a ball, with each player in that line having a ball. Player one with a ball passes to player two opposite of them without one. Receiving player takes a shot, retrieves their own rebound and goes to the end of the line with the ball. The passing player now moves to the end of the line without a ball - Keep the lines flowing. B.1. Curl Drill – (K-1st only) Have a player stand at the top corner of the free throw line. Form a line at the post with the remaining players lined up on the base-line) Have another player on the opposite wing with the ball. The first person in line runs from the post and curls around the player at the corner of the free throw line cutting towards the basket. Have the player receive a pass from the player on the wing and take the jump-shot. 9:25-9:35/10:40-10:50/11:55-12:05 (10 minutes) – DEFENSE A. Box-Out and Rebound Drill – (Demonstrate how to box-out) Form 1 line on each wing. Have player 1 face player 2 in each line, with player 2 being on offense facing the basket. Pass the ball to one of the offensive players and have them pass the ball back to you -Take a shot and miss – but as you shoot, have the rest of the line yell “Shot” – This will alert the defending players to turn around and box-out – Rotate from offensive to defense to end of the line. B. 1 on 1 Drill – Have two equal lines line up across from each other on the lines on the block (Much like you would for a free-throw). Number each kid off across from each other from 1 to 5 (depending on how many kids you have in your group) Coach will stand under the basket – roll the ball down the lane – call out a number. Those two will then go for the ball. The person who gets the ball will become offense with the other player becoming defense. 9:35-9:55/10:50-11:10/12:05-12:25 (20 Minutes) - GAMEDAY PREPARATIONS A. Explain all of the lines on a court. Sideline, Baseline, Half-Court Line, Free-Throw line, the lane etc. (Make sure they know what out-of-bounds means) B. Explain the procedure for when a basket is made – there is an in-bounds pass. Demonstrate and have them try. Have one line under the basket, with one kid in the lane. Begin by making a basket – have the first player in line retrieve the ball, stand behind the line - and have them in-bounds the ball to their teammate and have them dribble up court a ways. C. Explain procedure for in-game rebounds. On a missed shot during game – K-1st grade – Have rebounding player pass the ball to their coach. All players should then drop-back to the other end of the court with rebounding team on offense. Coach will then distribute the ball to an offensive player to dribble up court. (Play resumes) 2nd – 6th grade – Once the rebounder has the ball, everyone must drop back, and then the player can dribble up the court Note: NO FAST BREAKS ALLOWED FOR WEEK 5 – NO STEALS ALLOWED ANY WEEK. (Make sure the kids understand this) The only time stealing is allowed, is if the ball is passed directly into the defenders hands. C. Half-Court 5 on 5 (Or as numbers dictate) – More of a walk-through. This will be to give the kids an indication of what next week will be like. Have the offense pass the ball a few times before taking a shot, then switch offense to defense and so on. (Remember – NO STEALS – Unless the ball comes directly to the defender – No swiping at the ball, etc. – It will be important to explain that the offense can go anywhere on the court and the defender follows only the person they are guarding. They struggle with this concept for some reason, so clearly point that out. BE SURE TO TELL THE PLAYERS TO MOVE WITHOUT THE BALL AND TO REMEMBER TO ONLY GUARD THE PERSON THEY HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED. 9:55-10:00/11:10-11:15/12:25-12:30 (5 minutes) – WRAP-UP Review game day preparations.
