Your Guide to the College

Your Guide to the College
Hellyer College
Department of Education
Secretary’s Foreword
Welcome
Years 11 and 12 are two of the most important years of your education. They are the last steps of your
schooling life but the first steps into your future career pathway.
As young Tasmanians you will play an important role in the future of our state because when you enter
the workforce you will be helping to build our state and our economy.
The 2018 Student Guide for Years 11 and 12 provides you with the information you need to choose
the best program of study. Many of you will already know what career you are interested in, some others
won’t. The good news is that our schools offer you many options. You can either study a broad range of
subjects so that you can keep your options open whilst you make further decisions, or you can tailor
your learning to achieve particular career or pathway requirements.
You can access Years 11 and 12 through colleges and most high or district schools. We want you to have
every opportunity to study what you enjoy most. In the Guide you will find information on subjects that
support pathways in to further study, vocational training or prepare you to move into the workplace.
As you think about your choices it is important to remember that most employers and universities are
now looking for evidence that you have completed the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE). So before you make any decisions, do some research; look at the information you have gathered through My
Education, use the information in the Guide, and talk with your teachers, parents or carers, or people in
your career area of interest.
As you complete Year 12 you will not only have become an adult but will have also reached a significant
milestone in your journey as a lifelong learner.
I wish you well in your studies for 2018 and beyond.

Principal’s Welcome
This Course Guide has been prepared for new and returning students. I encourage you to read the
guide and discuss your future course of study with your parents/guardians and teachers. The learning
experiences you have encountered through My Education may have already given you clarity around
possible future pathways. If not, continue to think about your future and the type of career you would
like to pursue as well as those activities which will enrich you personally and allow you to contribute
fully to your community in the years to come.
The world of work continues to evolve and respond to changing global and economic trends, however,
the importance of learning and the ability to continue to learn throughout our lives remains a constant.
Hellyer College provides a unique environment that is premised on providing each of our students with
the support they require to learn and achieve their goals. Irrespective of your future pathway, Hellyer
College seeks to develop successful, qualified and skilled young people who are able to succeed in
further education, training or employment beyond Year 12. We do this by providing rich learning
opportunities including a diverse range of subjects, vocational learning programs and a wide range of
extra-curricular experiences.
In designing your personalised course I encourage you to challenge yourself to pursue your personal
interests and passions to the highest possible level. Alongside this, I invite you to consider studying
Mathematics, Science and English to the highest possible standard, as they combine to support high level
communication and problem solving.
If you are entering Year 11 please remember that you are designing a two year study program which
supports your achievement of Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE). Think of the TCE as your
graduation qualification. A well designed course combined with regular attendance and engagement in
class activities will ensure that you complete Year 12 with a TCE and a confident and optimistic plan for
life beyond college.
The staff and I look forward to working with you in 2018 and supporting you to have a fantastic college
experience.

Selecting a Course
College Counsellors will work closely with you, your teachers and parents/carers to choose subjects
that will fulfil your TCE requirements and post Year 10 goals. Subject choices should reflect your
career planning and My Education program from Year 10.
Information and course outlines for all subjects offered in Tasmania are available online at
http://www.tasc.tas.gov.au/.
Please note: Not all these subjects are offered by Hellyer College. A list of all the subjects offered at
Hellyer College can be found at the end of this booklet.
In the Online Course Information Handbook
for Years 11 & 12, 2018 every subject has a
short explanation. Coloured flow charts at
the start of each section will show you the
background and level of achievement
required for each subject.
TASC 3/4 subjects are called ‘pre-tertiary
subjects’, they count towards university
entrance.
Course counsellors will advise on an
appropriate mix of subjects and levels for
you.
Students who are interested in a
vocational pathway are encouraged to
undertake a VET Certificate program.
‘VET’ stands for Vocational Education
and Training. VET programs are
nationally recognised qualifications with
workplace learning to help you develop
employability skills.
5
Study Loads
For Years 11 and 12, the minimum study load at Hellyer College is 600 hours. This will be
composed of TASC subjects and/or a VET certificate program. TASC subjects are 150 hours in
length and take up one line on the timetable. Your Course Counsellor will discuss the number of
hours for each course.
All students will also be enrolled in Personal Pathway Planning as part of the college Support Group
program.
Timetable 2018
Students will be given individual timetables when they start college on the 7th February 2018.
College hours will be 8:50am to 3:00pm each day, Monday to Friday.
Students are required to be onsite during these hours, unless the college has been notified by
parents or caregivers.
Absences will only be accepted as approved, if Hellyer College is notified by the parent or caregiver. If a student has an unexplained absence an SMS is sent home at the end of each school day.
School Based Apprenticeships
Students who currently hold a SBA need to inform their College Course Counsellor, as
adjustments may need to be made to their timetable to support the requirements of the SBA.

The Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
This is a significant qualification that is increasingly sought by employers. Students planning a
University pathway will need to have gained their TCE in order to receive an ATAR score (see
next page).
If you are in Year 10 in 2017 you should plan your study program to gain this qualification over
Years 11 and 12. The TCE will only be issued to students who meet the requirements.
How do you qualify?
You will attain the TCE if your course contains subjects that allow you to gain the necessary
credit and complexity points and demonstrate the literacy, numeracy and ICT standards. You
must also complete the Personal Pathways Program (Support Group).
For more information on how you can qualify for the TCE check out the TASC website:
www.tasc.tas.gov.au/1278
The TCE does not qualify you for University Entrance, however to achieve an ATAR
you need your TCE.
Literacy, Numeracy and ICT Skills
In order to gain the TCE, you will need to demonstrate that you have met basic standards in
these areas in Years 11 and 12.
Most students will do this through successful completion of appropriate subjects and programs.
Sometimes students may not meet these standards. In these instances students need to sit ‘Safety
Net’ tests or complete relevant college short courses.
Working it all out
When you enrol, counsellors will help you choose subjects and calculate TCE progress. Literacy
and numeracy requirements can be obtained in all Maths and English courses and students should
plan to study these during Year 11 or 12.
7
Transition Planning
During Year 10 you will have developed a My Education Transition Plan. In Year 11 you will need
to review these plans for your future education, work or training. It is expected that students
will meet this requirement by actively participating in the Support Group Personal Pathway
Planning program at Hellyer College.
You cannot gain your TCE unless this requirement is met.
Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
The ATAR is a national ranking that is used for university entrance throughout Australia. A
maximum of five Level 3 subjects can be counted toward an ATAR. A maximum of two subjects
can be counted from Year 11 and a minimum of three subjects from Year 12.
The rank is calculated automatically for those students in Year 12 who meet the requirements. It
is based on a student’s best results. Students hoping to gain an ATAR will also need to have
completed the requirements for the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE).
The University Connections Program
The University Connections Program and University Extension Program offer our students the
opportunity to study first year level UTAS studies at Hellyer College. Some of these courses are
offered entirely at Hellyer College, some at UTAS Cradle Coast Campus and others are offered
alongside existing classes, with additional off campus workshops and learning experiences. All
year 11 and 12 students are eligible. Further discussion is encouraged with College Assistant
Principals if students are interested in further information. Course offerings are listed in the
following pages.
