SCHOOL OF MEDIA AND DESIGN GAME DEVELOPMENT Frequently Asked Questions Are laptops allowed to be used in the Game Development program labs ? The college provides computers for our students when they are at the college. Our program does not allow students to bring their personnel laptops into the computer labs. There are many good reasons for this policy. Do I need to have a computer to work off campus? We do recommend that students have a computer for working off campus. That computer could be either a desktop or a laptop. We do not recommend any brands or configurations, again there are many good reasons for this. For game development, students do require a medium to high end computer. Students themselves tend to know the specifications of such systems or can easily get this information. A small amount of research on line will also be very beneficial. There are pros and cons between laptops and desktops, generally it comes down to personnel preference. For example laptops have portability but their video cards cannot be updated. In a three year program you may find your laptop video card performance to be an issue. Currently about half our students use laptops. Although laptops are not allowed to be used in our labs they are still very useful on campus and the college has 100% wireless coverage. Do I need to have drawing or programming skills? Strong artistic or programming ability is not required for entrance or student success in the game development program. Can I take the program part-time? The demands of game development are such that they cannot be met on a part-time basis. I have a university degree or college diploma in a computer-related subject, what do I do? A few places in the second year of the program will be made available to students who have the appropriate background and an aptitude to succeed. If you are transferring from another technology program it may also be possible to join the game development program in the second semester (level 2) of the first year during the winter term. A degree or diploma does not guarantee exemption from the first-year. Please enquire. Where can I find more information about the Game Development program?
