rd 3 Ms. Sherer’s Grade Class Welcome to Parent Orientation August 11, 2016 Snacks •Optional •Healthy •Finger foods •Not a “lunch” Water Bottles •Water only •Tight fitting lid •May be filled once a day •Sanitize at home every day Restroom Breaks • Whole group breaks two times daily • Permission granted when necessary Attendance/ Transportation • Attendance affects our school AYP • Doctor’s note required for excused illness • Students counted tardy after 7:50 am, and may arrive as early as 7:15 • Transportation changes must be in writing and cannot be accepted through email • All early dismissals must be handled in the office Schedule • Specials: 9:50-10:35 • Monday-Art, Tuesday-P.E., Wednesday-Music, Thursday-P.E., Friday-Rotates *Please wear tennis shoes on P.E. Days* • Lunch: 12:17-12:47 Take Home Folder • Please review daily • Homework and any other paperwork to be completed will be placed in the right pocket. • Graded papers and any other paperwork to keep at home will also be placed in the right side pocket. • Please place parent notes here as well, and sign Behavior Calendar every Friday. Reading Log(Agenda) • To be initialed by parent daily • Total of at least 100 minutes per week • Parents, please write total minutes read each night next to your initials • To be checked by Ms. Sherer daily • Please, no parent notes written in Agenda. • Place notes to the teacher in the Take Home Folder only. Thank you. Homework and Make-up Work • H.W. is to be done daily and turned in on Friday. • Homework should be completed by the student, with • • • minimal help from parents. All homework is meant to reinforce the lessons taught that day, or review lessons from previous days. Please check the homework for accuracy, and allow student to make corrections and/or changes. If H.W. is not done, and there is no note from the parent, the student will go to study hall in place of recess. Make-up work, when necessary, will be sent home and expected within a week of the absence. Accelerated Reader • Three AR books per visit to the Media Center • Student-chosen books must have a reading level within • • • • • the student’s reading range Majority of quizzes must be 80%-90% or higher, or student’s reading range will be lowered until scores improve As quiz average reaches 90% or higher, reading range will be raised Ultimate Goal: *All AR tests=100%* Only at 100% will a student earn all possible points per book. Students work at their own pace toward individual goals, but will have a requirement of 3 AR points earned per week Several different types of incentives • • • • • Grading Scale Standards based reporting 3+ (exceeds standard) 3 (meets standard) 2 (making progress toward meeting standard) 1 (does not meet the standard at the present time) Learning Skills and Behaviors: “S”=Successful “P”=Progressing “N”=Needs Improvement Behavior Log reflects all Learning Skills and Behaviors on Report Card. Report Cards • Report cards go home every 9 weeks. • The signature card and envelope should be returned. • Conference time will be in October this year. The first 9 weeks report card will be given to you at your scheduled conference time. Responsibility/Behavior Incentives/Consequences • Tickets • Treasure box • Miscellaneous rewards for AR percentages, excellent • • academic work or effort, and cooperative behavior that is conducive to learning Reaching AR Goals: Lunch with teacher and/or principal, certificates, prizes in Media Center Unfortunately, a student must sit out for recess if homework is not complete, weekly AR goals are not met, or for any behavior issues. This is referred to as “Study Hall.” A student may also be assigned to “Silent Lunch.” Any major discipline issue will be documented and Administration will become involved. Testing • To be successful, get a good night’s sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast, and arrive to school on time. • CoGat-(Cognitive Abilities): Given to all 1st and 3rd graders September 13th through 15th. This test measures the child’s innate critical thinking and reasoning skills. This test is also used to determine possible placement in the Advanced Learning Program, or “Target.” • ITBS-(Iowa Test of Basic Skills/Iowa Assessment): Given to all 3rd and 5th graders September 16th through 21st. This test measures the amount of knowledge your child has gained and retained up to this point in his or her educational journey. This is an achievement test. • Georgia Milestone Testing: Given to all 3rd through 8th grade students in the state of Georgia April 19th through 25th. This is a standardized assessment which compares each student’s mastery of the Georgia Common Core Curriculum and Performance Standards to other students within the state of Georgia. Field Trips • Georgia State Capital-September • Performing Arts and Cultural Arts Day • Wellstar Health Presentations (at Bells Ferry) Parents, please send completed/signed permission slips and money back to school as soon as possible after you receive them. This is very helpful in expediting the field trip process and ensuring that your student will be able to take part in the full academic experience. Field trips may be cancelled due to insufficient funds. Thank you.
