From the Georgia Department of Education: “In today’s global marketplace, it is important for students to acquire the interdisciplinary skills they need to be globally competent and competitive. The seal will recognize students who engage in international education through courses, extra-curricular activities and service opportunities. The International Skills Diploma seal is awarded to graduating high school students who complete an international education curriculum and engage in extracurricular activities and experiences that foster the achievement of global competencies. It is a signal to employers and higher education institutions that a student is prepared to participate in the global economy.” What is the International Skills Diploma Seal? In Georgia we have more than 3,000 international companies that employ approximately 175,000 people. Another 2,500 companies are affiliated with these international businesses. What is the International Skills Diploma Seal? This Seal was developed by the United States Federal Department of Education. Only 3 states in the United States offer the International Skills Diploma Seal: Georgia, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Who can earn the International Skills Diploma Seal? Who can earn the ISDS? Any student who completes the requirements for the seal: Courses with an international focus or cross cultural focus Foreign Language Community service Extracurricular activities Capstone project Requirements for the International Skills Diploma Seal 1. Course with a global or cross cultural focus Year 4 of Foreign Language at Pope World History World geography World literature Macroeconomics CTAE etc course work Requirements for the International Skills Diploma Seal 2. Foreign Language At least 3 years of Foreign Language at Pope (middle school does not count). You can take 2 years of 1 language and 1 year of another language. If you take more than 3 years of foreign language, the courses can count towards the requirement of “courses with an international focus or cross cultural focus”. Foreign language classes outside of Pope must be through an accredited site to count for the Seal. Approval must come form the coordinators for the course to count for the seal. Community service with a cross cultural or global focus 20 hours Examples: Tutoring ESOL students at Pope, other schools, religious institutions, etc Translating for an institution or individual (monitored and verified by an institution) Etc All activities must be verified using forms the candidate receives. FOUR Extracurricular activities with an international or cross cultural or global focus examples: Overseas travel (with documentation) Attendance at international festivals in Atlanta Membership in FLOP or a Foreign Language Honor Society Etc All activities must be verified using forms the candidate receives. Requirements for the International Skills Diploma Seal 5. Capstone project This presentation is done by the student candidate in the spring of senior year. The student has a assigned faculty advisor and can ask another adult to be his/her mentor in the process. The goal for the Capstone experience is to demonstrate new learning and apply that new learning to create a final product that illustrates all of the student’s new global knowledge. The Capstone Project has 2 components: a written component and a presentation component. A committee of Pope High Faculty and Staff as well as community member will serve on the Capstone committee.
