Call for trainers on housekeeping on
passenger ships
The SHIPSAN ACT Joint Action funded by the European Commission DG SANCO from February
2013 to April, 2016, aims to increase Port Health Officers (PHOs) and crew competencies.
Currently we are in search for trainers for the successful execution of the Work Package 8 of the
Joint Action that concerns the training of seafarers and Port Health Officers (PHOs). The pool of
trainers established in previous project is going to be updated. For the following training courses
that will be organised, one of the subject areas will be housekeeping on passenger ships.

Job description
The successful candidates will provide theoretical and/or practical training to PHOs in order to
promote the coordination of inspections in EU Member States. They will also provide theoretical
and/or practical training to seafarers to help the industry implement the EU legislation standards.
The trainer has to be an expert on housekeeping on ships. Furthermore, in order to achieve the
objectives of the training, the trainer should have in-depth knowledge on natural and
mechanical ventilation, lighting, cleaning and disinfection as
a
key component of
housekeeping.

At the end of the training course the PHOs should be
able to:

Demonstrate knowledge on housekeeping
principles (cleaning, disinfection, body fluid
accidents).
2.
Verify cleaning, disinfection and sterilization
plans and their protocols.
3.
Plan an inspection for housekeeping on a
passenger ship.
At the end of the training course the seafarers
should be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge on housekeeping
principles (cleaning, disinfection, body fluid
accidents).
2.
Apply methods for cleaning, disinfection
and sterilization by avoiding crosscontamination.
Training material
Sample training material will be provided by the SHIPSAN ACT Joint Action partnership and will
be based on the European Manual for Hygiene Standards and Communicable Diseases
Surveillance on Passenger Ship. The selected trainers will be asked to prepare or modify the
existing relevant training material. The training material will be finalised during a 1-day “train the
trainers” course that all selected trainers will participate in and will take place prior to the
training modules.

Harmonise as much as possible the training methodology among trainers
Exchange experience, knowledge and expertise among the trainers
Promote the establishment of a human training network
Pilot test the case studies
Discuss and finalise the training material

Qualification and experience required
Essential
2 years post graduate experience on housekeeping
A degree in science or a related subject or equivalent(technical qualification and
significant experience on housekeeping on passenger ships)
Experience in training, mainly in housekeeping
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Ability to work well in an international and intercultural environment
Good knowledge of the relevant EU policies and activities related to housekeeping
five (5) years of
Desirable
Having experience related to housekeeping in ports or ships
Post-graduate qualifications related to housekeeping
Accredited as a trainer in public health
Participation in the training material production for the course
Training experience in ports or aboard ships
Experience as a member of a training committee
Experience in organizing workshops, conferences or related activities in water safety
A thorough knowledge of additional official languages of the European Union
Experience in providing computer and software training, particularly in the field of public health
Research experience: Participation in research projects. Thesis supervisor. Tutor. Scientific awards. Member
of the editorial board of scientific journals. Publications done in national and international journals
including epidemiological bulletins, books, book chapters, etc related to the activities of the course.
Presentations to scientific conferences. Patents.
Previous professional experience on hygiene inspections on passenger ships
Appointment and conditions of employment
The selection of trainers will be carried out by the SHIPSAN ACT Joint Action partnership, based
on the criteria listed below. You will be informed in writing on the outcome of the selection
process, at the latest by the end of August 2013.
