—1— THE DIVINE SERVICE THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST OCTOBER 5, 2008 | 9:00 AM & 11:00 AM In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, this church opens wide her doors and offers welcome to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are spiritually weak and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who are broken and long for healing; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness and want to be satisfied; and to whomsoever will come. REFLECTIONS Purity of heart is to will one thing. — SØren Kierkegaard — Anybody who enters into fellowship with Jesus must undergo a transvaluation of values. — Helmut Thielicke — The world dreams of progress, of power and of the future, but the disciples meditate on …the coming of the kingdom. To such heights the world cannot rise. And so the disciples are strangers in the world, unwelcome guests and disturbers of the peace. No wonder the world rejects them! — Dietrich Bonhoeffer — We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God. — Acts 14:22 — Bold text congregation in unison Congregational standing for those able Hands Raised for those who desire to do so —2— ENTERING INTO GOD’S PRESENCE WORDS OF ENTRANCE From Psalm 24:3-7 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. He will receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from God his Savior. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in. Come, let us adore him! HYMN OF ENTRANCE FOR ALL THE SAINTS Words: William How | Music: Christopher Miner | CCLI # 2665423 1. For all the saints, | who from their labors rest, Who Thee by faith | before the world confessed, Thy Name, O Jesus, | be forever blessed. Alleluia, Allelu... 2. Thou wast their rock, | their fortress and their might; Thou, Lord, their captain | in the well fought fight; Thou, in the darkness | drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Allelu... 3. O may Thy soldiers, | faithful, true and bold, Fight as the saints | who nobly fought of old, And win with them | the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, Allelu... 4. The golden evening | brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful | warriors comes their rest; Sweet is the calm | of paradise the blessed. Alleluia, Allelu... 5. But lo! There breaks | a yet more glorious day; The saints triumphant | rise in bright array; The King of glory | passes on his way, Alleluia, Allelu... 6. From earth's wide bounds, | from ocean's farthest coast, Through gates of pearl | streams in the countless host, Singing to Father, | Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia, Alleluia! —3— PRAYER OF ENTRANCE Te Deum Laudamus You are God: we praise you; You are the Lord: we acclaim you; You are the eternal Father: all creation worships you. To you all angels, all the powers of heaven, Cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company The noble fellowship The white-robed army Throughout the world of apostles praise you. of prophets praise you. of martyrs praise you. the holy Church acclaims you; Father, of majesty unbounded, Your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, And the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free you did not shun the Virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, Bought with the price of your own blood, And bring us with your saints To glory everlasting. Amen. WORDS OF WELCOME CALL TO CONFESSION From Matthew 6:31-33 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN —4— A Prayer for Reflection: Gracious Father, we confess the ways that we seek first the kingdom of self: We run after all sorts of things, not just food, drink, and clothing, but also love, success, riches, and power. We seek these things first and merely hope that your kingdom and righteousness can fit neatly around them. The result is a divided heart between your kingdom and our own. Lord, we can’t see you because our vision is blocked by our own ambitions, and therefore we don’t long for your kingdom of peace and wholeness and we certainly don’t want to suffer for it. Lord, have mercy and forgive us. Clear our line of sight to you. Make us single-minded and whole-hearted for your kingdom and let the rest of these things find orbit around your will and not our own. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT From James 4:8 and Colossians 1:13-14 Christians, draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Our help is in the name of the Lord, The Maker of heaven and earth. O Lord, open our lips, And our mouth will show forth your praise! HYMNS OF GRATITUDE & PRAISE LET US LOVE AND SING AND WONDER Words: John Newton | Music: Laura Taylor | CCLI # 2665423 1. Let us love and sing and wonder, let us praise the Savior’s name! He has hushed the law’s loud thunder, he has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame: He has washed us with his blood, he has washed us with his blood, He has washed us with his blood, he has brought us nigh to God. 2. Let us love the Called us by his eyes: He has washed us He has washed us Lord who bought us, pitied us when enemies, grace and taught us, gave us ears and gave us with his blood, he has washed us with his blood, with his blood, he presents our souls to God. 3. Let us sing, though fierce temptation threaten hard to bear us down! For the Lord, our strong salvation, holds in view the conqu’ror’s crown: He, who washed us with his blood, he, who washed us with his blood, He, Who washed us with His blood, soon will bring us home to God. —5— 4. Let us wonder grace and justice When through grace in Christ our no more: He who washed us with his blood, He who washed us with his blood, 5. Let us praise, and join the high; Here they trusted him before Thou hast washed us with thy blood, Thou hast washed us with thy join and point to mercy’s store; trust is, justice smiles and asks he who washed us with his blood, has secured our way to God. chorus of the saints enthroned on us, now their praises fill the sky: blood, thou hast washed us with thy blood, thou art worthy Lamb of God. I WILL GLORY IN MY REDEEMER Words & Music: Steve & Vikki Cook | CCLI # 2665423 1. I will glory in my Redeemer | Whose priceless blood has ransomed me; Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails | And hung him on that judgment tree. I will glory in my Redeemer | Who crushed the power of sin and death; My only Savior before the Holy Judge: | The Lamb who is my righteousness, The Lamb who is my righteousness. 2. I will glory in my Redeemer | My life he bought, my love he owns; I have no longings for another, | I’m satisfied in him alone. I will glory in my Redeemer: | His faithfulness my standing place; Though foes are mighty and rush upon me, | My feet are firm, held by His grace, My feet are firm, held by His grace. 3. I will glory in my Redeemer | Who carries me on eagles’ wings; He crowns my life with loving-kindness; | His triumph song I’ll ever sing. I will glory in my Redeemer | Who waits for me at gates of gold, And when he calls me it will be paradise; | His face forever to behold, His face forever to behold. I will glory in my Redeemer | Who crushed the power of sin and death; My only Savior before the Holy Judge: | The Lamb who is my righteousness, The Lamb who is my righteousness. CONFESSION OF FAITH WESTMINSTER SHORTER CATECHISM QUESTION 1 Christians, what is the chief end of man? Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. —6— RECEIVING GOD’S WORD MINISTRY MOMENT MOSSY CREEK FELLOWSHIP @ CARSON-NEWMAN COLLEGE THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON HAGGAI 1:2-11 English Standard Version "Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD." Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. "Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD. You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors." The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL LESSON MATTHEW 5:1-12 English Standard Version 1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. —7— 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ! Children Pre-K through 3rd Grade may be dismissed to Children’s Church at this time if that is their parents’ desire PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SERMON — THE BEATITUDES: LIFE IN THE KINGDOM — THE UNDIVIDED LIFE ASSOCIATE PASTOR MATT GRIMSLEY PRAYER OF COMMITMENT RECEPTION OF GIFTS HYMN OF RESPONSE JESUS, I MY CROSS HAVE TAKEN Words: Henry Lyte | Music: Bill Moore | CCLI # 2665423 1. Jesus, I my cross have taken, all to leave and follow thee. Destitute, despised, forsaken, thou from hence my all shall be. Perish every fond ambition, all I’ve sought or hoped or known. Yet how rich is my condition! God and heaven are still my own. 2. Let the world despise and leave me, they have left my Savior, too. Human hearts and looks deceive me; thou art not, like them, untrue. O while thou dost smile upon me, God of wisdom, love, and might, Foes may hate and friends disown me, show thy face and all is bright. 3. Go, then, earthly fame and treasure, come disaster, scorn and pain. In thy service, pain is pleasure, with thy favor, loss is gain I have called thee Abba Father, I have stayed my heart on thee. Storms may howl, and clouds may gather; all must work for good to me. —8— 4. Haste thee on from grace to glory, armed by faith, and winged by prayer. Heaven’s eternal days before thee, God’s own hand shall guide us there. Soon shall close thy earthly mission, soon shall pass thy pilgrim days, Hope shall change to glad fruition, faith to sight, and prayer to praise. DEDICATION OF GIFTS FEASTING AT GOD’S TABLE THE PEACE OF CHRIST In the ancient church, members of the congregation greeted one another with a sign of friendship. In the same way, let us welcome one another in the Lord: May the peace of Christ be always with you! And also with you! Let us offer one another a sign of peace. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING SURSUM CORDA (LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS) Music: Steve Hindalong & Terry Taylor | Arr. Bruce Benedict | CCLI # 2665423 Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: All: We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Leader: It is right to give him thanks and praise. All: It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. —9— PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER FOR THE ELEMENTS INVITATION TO THE TABLE Those who have professed faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins within a church body and who have been baptized are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper here at Redeemer. We receive the Lord’s Supper worthily only if we bear in mind that Christ gave his body for the remission of our sins; it is his merit only that admits us to this table. It is dangerous to eat the body and blood of the Lord otherwise. For this reason, we ask those who do not meet the above conditions to refrain from eating. We do encourage you to come forward for prayer from one of our ministers if you desire it, or to remain seated and to pray and reflect on what you have heard and seen in the service. The Christian who doubts his standing before God should labor to have his doubts resolved. This brother or sister in Christ is especially encouraged to eat this feast that he or she may be further strengthened in the faith. THE COMMUNION Please come forward, by row, to receive the bread and the cup. If you are not taking Communion, you may come forward for prayer, or remain seated. Please note that the center cup and inner circle contain grape juice, for those who desire it. We break bread in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit! And we declare the great mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. These are the gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God! COMMUNION HYMNS ONE PURE AND HOLY PASSION Words & Music: Mark Altrogge | CCLI # 2665423 This will be sung as a solo Give me Give me Give me To know one one one and pure and holy passion; magnificent obsession; glorious ambition for my life: follow hard after you. To know and follow hard after you, To grow as your disciple in your truth; This world is empty, pale, and poor Compared to knowing you, my Lord. Lead me on and I will run after you, Lead me on and I will run after you. — 10 — JESUS, LOVER OF MY SOUL Words: Charles Wesley | Music: Greg Thompson | CCLI # 2665423 1. Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, ’til life’s storm is past; Safe into the haven guide; receive my soul at last. 2. Other refuge have I none, I helpless, hang on thee; Leave, oh leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all help from thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head in the shadow of thy wing. 3. Thou, O Christ, are all I want, more than all in thee I find; Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy Name, I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace. 4. Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, let me take of thee; Spring thou up within my heart; for all eternity. MAY THE MIND OF CHRIST MY SAVIOR Words: Kate B. Wilkinson | Music: A. Cyril Barham-Gould | CCLI # 2665423 1. May the mind of Christ, my Savior, live in me from day to day, By his love and pow’r controlling all I do and say. 2. May the Word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour, So that all may see I triumph only through his pow’r. 3. May the peace of God, my Father, rule my life in everything, That I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing. 4. May the love of Jesus fill me, as the waters fill the sea; Him exalting, self abasing: this is victory. 5. May his beauty rest upon me as I seek to share his life, And may they see only Jesus, Savior, Crucified. Taking Worship Home gives an extension of our corporate worship on Sunday into your daily life throughout the week. We encourage you to use this worship resource whether you are a single person, a married couple, roommates, or a family. TWH is published weekly in the bulletin and can either be viewed or downloaded from our web site. If you have any comments, feedback or questions, please speak with Pastor Matt Grimsley (454-1619 | [email protected]). OPENING WORDS Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. CONFESSION OF FAITH WESTMINSTER SHORTER CATECHISM QUESTION 1 Christians, what is the chief end of man? Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. READINGS FOR THE WEEK PSALM 24 HAGGAI 1:2-11 MATTHEW 5:1-12 MATTHEW 6:19-33 2 CORINTHIANS 5:16-21 HYMN OF THE MONTH I WILL GLORY IN MY REDEEMER Words & Music: Steve & Vikki Cook | CCLI # 2665423 1. — 19 — 2. CLOSING PRAYER Te Deum Laudamus You are God: we praise you; You are the Lord: we acclaim you; You are the eternal Father: all creation worships you. Amen. — A Guide to Community Groups — What Are Community Groups? Because Redeemer Church exists to celebrate the gospel of Jesus. Redeemer’s community groups are regular gatherings (meeting 1 to 3X/month) of Christians and seekers in homes for gospel worship, gospel community, and gospel service. While these groups may meet at different times and experience life together in different ways, the members of each group share the same purpose: to know and enjoy Christ together and to let others know Christ’s love through their love for each other (John 13:34-35). After our gathered worship services, Redeemer’s community groups are the second most important thing we do as a church. Why are they important? There are several reasons why we say community groups are the second most important aspect of church life at Redeemer: In them, we can be close enough to make a difference in each other’s lives; through them, we love & serve one another, the larger church & the city; and by them, we can give others a place to discover the gospel through word & deed. How should I go about finding a group? You should keep several considerations in mind as you look for a group: 1. Geography can play an important role for you in choosing a group. (If you live in Karns, it may be a long trek to South Knoxville and vice versa). 2. Day & Time may play a factor. If you have regular events on your calendar for certain days of the week, then you will want to try a group that meets on a day and time that is most available for you. 3. Group Dynamics can also be an important factor. Many of our groups are diverse and others are more homogenous. You will probably want to visit a group 3 to 4 times before making a conclusion about whether a group’s dynamics fit you or not. 4. The Cross, we pray, will shape your decision. Where are you needed? Where can you best fit for serving and giving yourself to others? Do you have gifts and availability to help lead or host a new group? — A Directory of Community Groups — Day Group Time Frequency Contact Information Sunday Interested?
