Plan on another 4 hours per week outside of class to meet college standards. Textbooks: Adobe InDesign CS6 Revealed, Chris Botello Instructional Packet for CAS 232 InDesign Supplies: USB Drive and a notebook or cover for a portfolio Course Outcomes: Utilize and manage features of the desktop publishing software to create publications for business use. Use critical thinking skills to independently produce publications. Use software efficiently and effectively. Integrate and/or import documents from related software to create effective publications General Information: InDesign is a self-paced course allowing you to progress at your own rate. You will be provided with a suggested time schedule to assist you in completing the course. We recommend you follow this suggested schedule carefully. This instructional packet is your guide for the course. Always have it available in class so that you are following proper procedures. Reading your textbook and planning your work out of class will allow you to maximize the use of your in-class computer time. This text is organized into 12 chapters; we will be covering the first 10 chapters. You will explore the many options InDesign provides for creating comprehensive layouts, including formatting text and body copy, designing display headlines, setting up a document, working with process and nonprocess colors, placing graphics from Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, working with tabs and tables, and preparing an InDesign layout for output. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to create professional-looking layouts that incorporate illustrations and bitmap graphics as well as sophisticated presentations of text and typography InDesign CS6/CAS 232 Page 3 Academic Integrity: You will be asked to sign an Academic Integrity Statement. This agreement reminds you and your instructor that you will follow the policies of the course and will not share scored work, including tests with other students. Attendance: Regular attendance is essential in order to meet all requirements. Your instructor may have an attendance policy, which will be discussed during the first week of class. Although this course is designed as self-paced course, your instructor may lecture from time to time to clarify specific projects and concepts. If you miss these lectures, it will be your responsibility to arrange a time to meet with your instructor. These lectures will not be repeated individually during class time. In the business world, it is your responsibility to get to your job and to be there on time. This is also your responsibility in this classroom. Time Commitment: This course meets for five hours per week (one hour is TBA). To meet the college standard of two hours outside of class for each credit, plan to spend an additional six hours per week in order to complete this course. These additional hours may be completed in the CAS lab, the CRC lab or on your home computer. The instructor will give your information on CAS lab hours the first week of class. Approach to the Course: At the beginning of each chapter in the text is a list of objectives for the material in the chapter. By the time you complete the unit, you should easily meet each of these objectives. Each chapter is divided into lessons that provide in-depth conceptual information of the concepts covered and step-by-step instructions to apply the various concepts. Progress Record: Each student will receive a folder with the course progress record attached inside. This progress record is for instructor use only. This progress record lists the assignments to complete and assignments that will be printed and graded. At the end of each unit are a number of Skill Drills and Challenge activities. These activities provide additional needed practice at the computer. Many of the Challenge activities will be scored documents. These will be indicated in bold on the course progress record. Your packet will also have a copy of the progress record attached at the back of the packet. Project Files: Project Files that you will use in the class are accessible from the classroom network. InDesign files consume a large amount of space on any storage device. It is recommended that you use the network files as you need them and save the work that is required for the course on your storage device. If you want to have the data files on your home computer, you can download them from the CD that is packaged with your textbook. InDesign CS6/CAS 232 Page 4 Assessment: In order to complete the course and receive credit, you must complete all computer exercises (self-check), scored documents, theory reviews, two performance tests, two theory tests, and prepare a portfolio. Your instructor will grade the scored documents by using the Document Scoring Guide on page 8 of this packet. Your grade will be derived from: Self-Check 10% Scored Documents 30% Theory Chapter Review Tests 10% Production Tests 40% Portfolio 10% If you have not completed the course and have not officially withdrawn or made arrangements with the instructor for a CIPR grade, you will be given a grade of F. An Incomplete is reserved for the student who has one test to complete. An Audit or a Pass/No Pass must be discussed within the first two weeks. Scored & Self-check Documents: In Chapters 1-10 you will be asked to produce scored and self-check documents. Scored documents will be graded by your instructor using the Document Scoring Guide found on page 8 and count for 20% of your final grade. You must complete all of the self-check documents to receive a grade for the course, but they will not be scored and will count for 10% of your final grade. Theory Reviews: You will be completing weekly theory tests, using Desire2Learn that will count for 20% of your grade. These tests will be made up of true/false, matching, multiple choice, and fill in questions. Performance Tests: You will also have two performance tests that will be completed using the computer. You will be asked to produce documents similar to those you have completed in your weekly assignments. The performance tests will each count 20% toward your final grade. Portfolio: A portfolio is a sample of the work that has been completed and is required. The portfolio should include documents that reflect the work completed in the course. Your instructor may give you further instructions. This portfolio may then be used as a reference guide or a sample of your work that you may wish to show a future employer. The portfolio makes up 10% of your grade. Your portfolio will be assessed using the Portfolio Scoring Guide at the back of this packet. InDesign CS6/CAS 232 Page 5 Document Scoring Guide: Documents that are used in business must be error free and professional appearing. Because our program is designed to prepare students for the world of work, these same standards will be used to assess your performance in this class.
