LITERARY CAFE: All students in grades 6 through 8 are invited to join us for informal book discussions, poetry readings, and literary games. The purpose of the program is to make reading FUN and promote life-long reading habits by encouraging students to read, discuss, and enjoy quality, contemporary literature. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CLUB: The students in this club will have fun while learning to promote the use of processes and skills of science. Students will participate in experiments, projects, and environmental issues. This club will be lots of fun!!! Some activities offered are basketball, bocce ball, bowling, soccer, table tennis, and football. Appropriate clothing will be required. P. E. uniforms required to participate in intramurals. Students who enjoy problem solving, competition, and math are invited to join the math club to meet other students and engage in friendly competitions while preparing to compete in the 24 Math Challenge, and Math Counts. We will play games, solve complex puzzles and problems, engage in competitions and stretch our math skills while having fun. Thursdays, 2:50-4:00 p.m./RoomA121/Ms. Hughes/Ms. Crabbe MODEL UNITED NATIONS/HISTORY DAY CLUB: Members of the Model UN Club will meet to debate and research current affairs going on in our world. Our school will be assigned to represent a nation in the world. We will become familiar with global problems facing that nation and prepare to debate those problems at a county-wide conference. If you are interested in current events, social studies and love to debate then this is the club for you! In the Fall there will be a special focus on History Day projects. Students can attend meeting to prepare individual projects to compete in the county-wide competition. This club will meet on designated Thursdays, at least once per month, 2:50 – 4:00 p.m./A105/Mrs. Case NEWSPAPER CLUB: The SPMS student newspaper, The Spark, is written by and for the students. Each year, The Spark seeks student reporters in grades 6, 7, and 8 to help publish three issues -- Fall, Winter, and Spring. Students will come up with story ideas, interview sources, write articles, edit submissions, and work on layout. Students must have knowledge of writing mechanics and be creative, dependable, and selfmotivated. Thursdays, 2:50 - 4:00 pm./Mrs. Lane, Room C107. SPRING MUSICAL: Open to all SPMS students. Auditions will take place in December. Students should be prepared to sing from a musical of their choice accompanied by a CD or tape with no vocals. A small dance number will be taught in groups. Rehearsals will take place from January thru April with five shows in April. There is also a strong need for student participation in stage crew, props, lighting, sound, ushers, concessions and flower sales. PEER TUTORS: Members of the National Junior Honor Society are trained to work with students on organization, study skills, and to tutor all areas of academics. These tutors are available Thursdays after school. Students are referred to tutoring by parents, teachers, or may self refer. Students requesting tutoring must sign a contract and commit to four weeks of assistance. Thursdays/ 2:50 – 4:00 p.m./Cafeteria /Mrs. Habicht REFLECTIONS (BLACK SAGA) CLUB: Reflections meets on Thursdays. The club is open to anyone interested in exploring the African-American experience and developing leadership skills. The first meeting will be on Sept. 29. Thursdays /2:50-4:00/B105/ Ms. Galetsky SGA: (Student Government Association) is an introduction to student government procedures and activities. Student delegates must be able to attend SGA meetings twice a month. One meeting is during the school day and one meeting is after school. Delegates must want to be active members and future leaders. Students are involved in SGA at the school, county and state levels. Interested students must complete an application form which is provided by Social Studies teachers. This activity is of no cost to students, except for overnight stays. Thursdays, 2:50 – 4:00 p.m./E-109/Ms. Lewis/Mrs. Chew TECH ED CLUB: Future Scientists & Engineers of America (FSEA) is a National program that focuses on technology. This program gives students an opportunity to experience real engineering and science with a practical, hands-on method that uses projects that challenge student teams to creatively solve problems. FSEA team members experience the same process an engineer or scientist experiences, i.e., given an objective, using techniques of innovation, design, creativity, trial and error, how well can that objective be met? 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, 2:50 4:00 P.M., A122/Mr. Prendergast/ Mr. Montagnino YEARBOOK The yearbook is looking for an energetic staff that is willing to put the effort into documenting the school year through photographs, interviews and computers. Our time at school is limited, so staff members must be willing to put in time at home, as well as during a school day, to create a memory. Thursdays, 2:50 - 4:00 P.M C105/Mrs. Harris/Mrs. Torelli YOUTHRISE/LEO: (Youth Representatives Involved in Service Learning Education) This club is open to all students who would like to participate actively in service learning projects in our school, community, and state. Some of our projects include visits to nursing homes, food and toy drives for the needy, making craft projects for the children at Sarah's House and Johns Hopkins, as well as honoring SPMS staff during STAFF Appreciation Week.
