Saturday and Sunday session overviews
Overview of game and game plan approach
Here we will focus on how we want to approach the game plan as a club and as
individual teams. We will discuss and showcase the Double post approach AS WELL
AS other attack patterns to work on during the season.
This will have the following focus
 Team
 Forwards / backs
 Units
 Individual
Structure of set pieces and moves
How set pieces are the launch vehicle to the double post play and what we require
them to do. We will cover the structure and tone we want to set and the individual
moves we want to use to do this.
 Lineout
 Scrum
 Restarts
 Specific Moves
 Responsibility to call by units
Defence
We will work through the importance of defence and how to react accordingly to
different attack responses.
This will focus on
 Patterns of response
 Structure and responsibility close and wide
Game scenario and live team play
Will ‘test’ and trial all work we have done in live play situations in mixed groups.
These will enable us to see how attack and defence patterns can work and we will
work to the holy grail of controlling a game by speeding it up AND slowing it down.
Focus will be on:
 Scenario game play
 Focussed timing of when to do what
Guest Coaching
We have two guest coaches Alex Goode and Mel Deane who over the two days will
input into the following areas:
 Backline structure and attack basics
 Defensive co-ordination and technique
About our guest coaches:
David Alexander Vallance Goode (born 7 May 1988) is a professional
English rugby union player playing in the Aviva Premiership for Saracens F.C..
Regarded by most as one of the greatest attacking fullbacks in the world.
Warren Gatland didn't take Goode on The Lions 2013 tour to Australia as he
didn't think it was fair on Australia and wanted to give the likes of Leigh
Halfpenny, Stuart Hogg and Rob Kearney a fair chance at 15!
Mel Deane (born 16 January 1975) is a former rugby union footballer who
played centre for Connacht, Harlequins and Sale Sharks and Richmond. Mel
Deane has represented Ireland A and was also part of the Ireland squad that
toured New Zealand in 2002. Mel retired after the 2007/2008 season finishing
his career at Connacht. Mel is now a professional fitness consultant in South
West London. And is famed as the only back strong enough in the English game to
pick up the Warlingham head coach!
CAGE Rugby
The club (with a lot of help and foresight from our youth section – thank you Frank)
have also laid on Cage Rugby. WHAT IS CAGE RUGBY? Cage rugby is played at
high intensity, players are required to think how to defeat their opponent. Cage
Rugby is fast and exciting, providing an action packed game that keeps players
physically active while having fun...
It is also perfect for developing young players' confidence in contact.
