Meet the Head Coach
JAMES LANCASTER
Head Coach
(Tenth Season)
James Lancaster is beginning his
10th season as the head coach of
Aurora University’s men’s basketball
program. Prior to becoming the men’s
coach, Lancaster coached AU’s women’s
program for four seasons.
During his tenure as the men’s head coach, Lancaster
has amassed a composite record of 157-75 (.677), which is
the highest winning percentage of any men’s basketball
coach at AU. His teams also won back-to-back titles in the
Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference from 1996 to 1998.
Lancaster was named NIIC Coach of the Year in back-toback seasons in ’98-’99. In addition to success in terms of
won-lost records, Lancaster has built the AU program into
one recognized for being competitive with a strong annual
schedule, boasting top-flight opponents.
A 1986 graduate of Aurora University with a bachelor’s
degree in physical education. Lancaster was an assistant
coach for the AU men’s team from 1986 to 90. He played
two seasons for AU (1984-86). As a senior, he was named
All-Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference and AU’s
male Athlete of the Year. Lancaster was also the Spartans’
MVP.
Prior to attending AU, Lancaster attended Wabash
Community College, where he played for one of the
nation’s top community college programs which was 63-13
in two seasons. While at WCC, Lancaster was teammates
with former NBA star Kenny Norman. Lancaster also
enjoyed a stand-out prep career at Taylorville High School.
In his first season as AU’s men’s head coach in 1994-95,
he was tabbed as the NIIC’s Coach of the Year. That gave
him the unusual distinction of winning that award both as
a women’s coach (in 1993-94) and as a men’s coach.
As head coach of AU’s women’s program, Lancaster was
a composite 58-42 – including a 32-8 record in the NIIC,
which is the AU All-Time winningest women’s basketball
coach – had a pair of second-place finishes (1991 & 1992),
and won back-to-back NIIC titles in 1993 and 1994. The
1993-94 team qualified for the NCAA post-season playoffs
for the first time in the school’s history. In 2001 Lancaster
returned the men’s team to the NCAA Tournament for the
second time in AU history, the first being in 1998. In 200203, Lancaster’s Spartans won their first tournament game
and advanced to the second round enroute to a school
record 24 wins.
Lancaster is married (Michele) and has four daughters
(Baylee, Kelsey, Jenna, and Delaney). They reside in Sugar
Grove. In addition to his duties as men’s basketball coach,
Lancaster is also the director of freshman recruitment.

Meet the Assistant
Coaches
JASON HARMON
Assistant Coach
(Fourth Season)
Jason Harmon joined the men’s
coaching staff after two seasons as an
assistant with the women’s basketball
team. He also has coached with the Fox
Valley Tigers, an Amateur Athletic Union
(AAU) basketball team, and helped them to a 78-43 record.
As a player, Harmon played two years of varsity
basketball with the Spartans (’96-’98). Harmon was named
to the NIIC All-Conference team in ’98 and helped AU to a
21-5 record and its first ever NCAA Division III playoff
appearance.
Harmon is a 1998 graduate of Aurora University and
earned his degree in business administration and a minor
in psychology.
Jason and his wife Jill now reside in Montgomery. He is
currently the assistant director of freshman admission.

AU Men’s Basketball
Meet the Assistant
Coaches
JABARI HARRELL
Assistant Coach
(Second Season)
Jabari Harrell joined the men’s coaching staff after one season as a student
coach. As a player, Jabari played three
years on the men’s varsity basketball
team. He was the team captain of the
varsity basketball team from (1997to 2001). He was named
NIIC All-Conference his sophomore, junior, and senior year.
Jabari was also named Co-Conference Player of the Year his
senior year. In 1998, he was able to play in AU’s first-ever
NCAA Division III playoff appearance and returned to the
playoffs in 2001. Jabari is the all-time assist leader at Aurora
University.
Harrell is a 2002 graduate of Aurora University and
earned his degree in recreation administration. He currently
is the assistant director of student activities and intramural
and rec-time coordinator.
2003-2004
Season Preview
“Success Breeds Success”
In nine seasons as head coach of men’s basketball at Aurora
University, James Lancaster’s teams have built their success
upon the previous success of the teams in his program. The
2002-2003 season resulted in the Spartans accomplishing their
highest level to date. As with six of the other Lancaster-coached
teams, these Spartans earned the right to play in the NCAA
National Championship tournament.
The goal for the 2002-2003 team was to not just play in the
tournament, but to be successful, too. Before they could
accomplish that goal, they first had to qualify for the
tournament. The Spartans took care of that, winning the
Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference tournament by defeating
regular season NIIC champion (and tournament host) Rockford
College to earn the NIIC automatic bid.
Carrying the momentum from winning that hotly-contested
NIIC bid, the Spartans set the stage for AU men’s basketball
history. For the first time, AU advanced beyond the first round
by defeating nationally-ranked Trinity University (TX), 67-66 in
San Antonio, TX. That, too, was a thrilling competition ending
when the Spartans’ Adam McCoy hit a game-winning jump
shot from a perfectly executed play with time running down.
AU traveled for the second round to Los Angeles, CA where
they lost an exciting battle with Occidental College, 80-61, in
front of a capacity crowd of over 1,800 people. A formidable
opponent, with a record-breaking season themselves,
Occidental eventually were eliminated in the Elite Eight.
Adding to the significance of the Spartans’ accomplishments
is the fact that the Spartans last three games in tournament
competition were all on the road and against three teams with
a combined record of 69-11.
When it was over, the Spartans held several spots in AU
men’s basketball history. They earned their first-ever automatic
bid to the tournament. They earned their first-ever NCAA
Division III tournament victory. They finished the season 24-6
setting a new school record, and setting the level of success for
the next team to build from for the future.
Leading the way will be hometown product senior center
Andre Meeks (Aurora, IL/East Aurora HS). Meeks averaged 12.1
points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. Joining Meeks
down low will be athletic junior Terrel Watkins (Bellwood,
IL/Proviso West HS). Watkins had 5.5 points per game and 6.5
rebounds per game. Returning at the wings will be junior three
year starter Drew Gronau (Streamwood, IL/Streamwood HS)
and junior Adam McCoy (Decatur, IL/ St. Teresa HS). Gronau
knocked down 55 3-point shots and averaged 9.2 points per
game. McCoy averaged 11.4 points per game and hit on 40% of
his 3-point attempts. McCoy, who primarily came off the
bench last year, will be looked to carry the scoring load along
with Meeks and Gronau. “We have always had a strong inside
game to go along with our 3-point shooters. I don’t expect
much to change this season. They know the pressure is on
them to continue the tradition. We have a good nucleus
coming back and we look to those players to fill the necessary
holes,” Lancaster added.
Joining Meeks and Watkins down low on the post will be
sophomore Jeremy Rauch (Tinley Park, IL/Rich Central HS).
Rauch averaged 4 minutes a game last year. Lancaster will look
to Rauch to provide a strong backup off the bench. Adding
depth down low will be sophomores Eric Gullickson (West
Dundee, IL/Dundee-Crown HS) and Ben Stahl (Somonauk IL/
Somonauk HS), Junior K.J. Brown (Chicago, IL/Hirsch HS),
freshmen David Uribe (Aurora, IL/East Aurora HS), and Tim
Hooper (Chicago, IL/Proviso West HS). Hooper is nephew of
former Aurora College and NBA star Mickey Johnson.
Providing quality backup at the wing positions will be
sophomore Tony Carson, Jr. (Decatur, IL/Eisenhower HS).
Carson averaged 3.7 points per game and made 38% of his 3point attempts. Senior Andrew Browning (Batavia, IL/Geneva
HS), junior transfer Marcus Roby (Rockford, IL/Guilford HS),
junior Billy Lewis (Elgin, IL/Larkin HS), freshman Brian
Nieznanski (Aurora, IL/Aurora Central Catholic HS), and
sophomore Aaron Perez (Winter Park, FL/Neuqua Valley HS)
all look to add depth.
After losing Point Guard Adam Chae to graduation AU’s
offense will lie in the hands of sophomore Courtney Carson
(Decatur, IL/MacArthur HS). Carson is the cousin of AU
swingman Tony Carson, Jr. Backing up Carson at the point will
be Brett Carroll (Roscoe, IL/Rockton Hononegah HS). Adding
depth at the point guard position will also be senior Antwione
Allen (Chicago, IL/Manley HS), freshman Aaron Burden (Park
Forest, IL/Rich Central HS) and sophomore Andy Madden
(Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy).
As this season begins, the Spartans can look forward to
another grueling non-conference schedule to prepare them for
the battles within the NIIC and their next attempt to win the
conference championship and an automatic bid. With the
competitive level of the NIIC, the Spartans will also be well
prepared for the teams they may face in the post-season. As a
conference, two of the last three years the NIIC has sent two
teams to the national tournament. The NIIC is the only
Division III conference to do so.
The Spartans success will be a foundation to build from for
this season. Breaking the school record for wins and winning a
first-round NCAA playoff game sets the level for what is
expected from Aurora University men’s basketball. If success
breeds success, then the Spartans should be in for a very
exciting season.

The Pride of the Spartans
MICKEY JOHNSON
Aurora College - 1970-74
& NBA Great - 1974-1986
In a pre-game ceremony prior to the March 17, 1978 game
between the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls, Dr. Sam
Bedrosian, Aurora University’s former athletic director, ceremoniously took A
College’s #43 out of commission. It was a day to honor “MJ”
of “Da Bulls.”
No, not that “MJ.”
This was a tribute to Aurora
College’s original “MJ”...Mickey
Johnson, formerly of “Da Spartans.”
At a time when the other “MJ” was
probably just learning to dribble a
basketball and pounding milk
(instead of Gatorade), Mickey
Johnson was performing feats of
excellence against the opponents on
AU’s schedule.
Johnson also helped dispel any
nay-sayers who may have felt that
his incredible collegiate numbers
were a result of playing at a nonNCAA Division I program. In his 12
year NBA career– the first five of
which were spent with the Bulls –
Johnson averaged 14.1 points and 6.8
rebounds per game. He racked up
904 NBA games played with the Bulls,
Indiana, Milwaukee, Golden State,
and New Jersey. He appeared in 22
post-season games with a scoring
average of 13.7 p.p.g. As a forward,
he also averaged nearly three assists
per game and had two years with 300+ assists.
But Johnson is about more than numbers alone. He
completed his degree work in business administration in 1974 (prior
to entering the NBA), completed an outstanding professional
basketball career, has worked to refurbish his old neighborhood and
is now a successful businessman in the Chicago area.
That’s not too bad for a kid who grew up in the shadows of the old
Sears Building and played very little high school basketball.
Perhaps the inscription on the plaque presented to Johnson by Dr.
Bedrosian that night in 1978 said it best: “...in appreciation for your
contribution to Aurora College and SOCIETY - student, athlete,
alumnus, gentleman. A model for every person who strives for
excellence...”
Mickey Johnson’s efforts and humanitarian outlook on life will
forever be the standard for future Spartan athletes. He was – and is
still today –The Pride of the Spartans.

Eckhart Hall
Aurora University is a private, independent,
comprehensive institution with an enrollment of more than
4,000 students. AU is accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools.
Aurora University traces its origins to the 1893 founding
of Mendota Seminary. In 1985, Aurora College changed its
name to Aurora University to reflect the growth of curricular
offerings at the graduate level. Today the university enrolls
more than 4,000 students in the College of Arts, Sciences and
Business; College of Education; and George Williams College
of Health and Human Services. More than 40 undergraduate
majors are offered, and at the advanced level, the institution
offers master’s degrees in business, education, recreation
administration, and social work, as well as a doctoral degree
in education.
Aurora University is located in west Aurora, within an
hour’s drive of Chicago and at the western end of the Illinois
Research and Development Corridor. It is accessible via
Interstate 88 at the Orchard Road exit.
The Alumni Hall of Physical Education features a
racquetball court, climbing wall, complete locker room
facilities, a training room, weight room, aerobic-activities
room, classroom, and coaches’ offices.
Through its merger with George Williams College, the
university operates a second campus in Williams Bay,
Wisconsin. Set on 241 acres, the Aurora University Lake
Geneva campus is a site for summer family church camps, a
respite camp for children with cancer and diabetes, and a
place for student gatherings, outdoor education activities, an
experiential leadership program, and year-round family
programs. The campus also serves students enrolled in
Aurora University’s Master of Arts in Teaching Program and
hosts the annual Music by the Lake summer festival and the
Music by the Lake Academy of the Arts.
