GREAT PEOPLE IN HISTORY
- How to define “great people in history”?
- Who do you think are such great people?
Alan Turing (1912-1954) was an English
mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer
scientist. He invented the Turing Machine – the
conceptual precursor of the modern computer.
During World War II, Turing served the Allied
forces by breaking German military codes,
particularly those used by the German navy.
He devised a range of code-breaking tools.
The Bombe codebreaking machine
Without Turing’s contributions, some military
historians estimate, the war would have
continued for at least another two years, and
two million more lives would have been lost.
