Principal’s Message
Dear Parents,
As the holiday season
approaches, the spirit of
the season moves the
scholars and staff at
Wicklow Elementary
School to reach out to
others less fortunate, to
spend time with our loved
ones, and to give thanks.
In this spirit, I would like to
extend my sincerest
gratitude to each and
every one of you for your
time, talent, and
support. Being part of a
community that embraces
the true meaning of giving
is one of the many
aspects that make
Wicklow such a
remarkable place and for
that, I am grateful.
During our Thanksgiving
Break, school will be
closed November
21st through November
25th. Classes resume on
Monday, November 28,
2016.
During the Winter Break,
school will be closed from
December 22nd through
January 6th. Classes will
resume on Monday,
January 9th, 2017.
Scholars are encouraged
to read daily over the
breaks. Please spend
time over both breaks
with those most important
to you. During this time, it
is so rewarding to reflect
on all that is good and
positive in our lives. I wish
you blessed and peaceful
breaks filled with much
happiness and memories!
Kindest regards,
Mrs. Martina Herndon
Principal

Kindergarten News
Hello Wonderful Kindergarten
Families! Can you believe how fast
our school year is going? It’s hard to
believe we are already in November!
Our Kindergarten students are fully
into their classroom routines at this
point and are moving forward with a
great deal of learning! We have been
incredibly busy learning our letter
sounds, sight words, numbers,
shapes, and measurement through
exciting activities involving pumpkins
and bats! We will be moving forward
to our Holiday activities through the
month of December and growing to
become beginning or mid-level
readers! Please watch for
announcements about our annual
Holiday Show that will be coming up in
December. Our children work so hard
to put on a great performance and we
know you will not be disappointed!
Also, be sure to ask them about their
experiences with “Holidays Around the
World” as they learn about a variety of
cultures and celebrations through
holiday activities!
should be reviewing their sight words
daily so they can grow as an
independent reader.
Have a wonderful holiday season and
we will share more exciting news in the
New Year!
Please continue to work with your child
nightly on their homework. Also, they
First Grade News
We are excited that November and
December brings us new standards.
We will be expanding our
understanding of text. We have
started working on explaining
differences between books, retelling
stories, understanding central
message, identify who is telling the
story, use illustrations to describe
characters, setting, or events, and
much more. We are going to explore
words with two meanings, examples
would be; bark, bat, bowl, fly, stamp,
sink, and can. Please continue to
read with your scholar for 15-20
minutes a day.
In math we are learning about place
value and comparing numbers. The
scholars are learning that the numbers
from 11-19 are made of 1 “ten” and
some “ones”. The scholars are learning
that a bundle of ten ones is a “ten”. The
scholars are working hard on counting
to 120 by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s. They are
Second Grade News
Second Grade is working hard! We
are looking forward to our field trip on
November 11th to The Orlando
Science Center; please have your
$20.00 payment turned in by October
28th. Many of the scholars are excited
about this adventure!
We continue to learn the PRIDE rules
and procedures. Please continue
to read, sign and return your child's
planner every day to facilitate
communication with the teachers.
It is also important to read with your
child each night and discuss the story
for comprehension. In order to be on
grade level your child should be
reading at least 30 minutes per evening
for fluency.
Have a blessed holiday season. Thank
you for all of your continued support
this year!
also working on counting from any given
number to 120. Please continue to
complete homework nightly.
The 50th day of school was Friday,
October 21. We had a blast celebrating
with our friends. Thank you for the
support with this event.
In science we are still gaining
knowledge in motion. We will be visiting
the science lab to investigate more
about motion. In December we will start
observing stars. The key ideas that we
will be investigation are there are more
stars than can be counted than can
usually be seen, stars are scattered in
the sky, and telescopes are types of
magnifiers. One misconception about
stars that children may have is that the
sun and stars move across the sky.

Third Grade News
As the first trimester comes to a close,
our scholars continue to work hard. In
reading we are focusing on finding text
evidence, main idea, and have moved
on to text features of non-fiction
text. Please continue to encourage
your scholar to read every night and
discuss what was read.
In Math we are finishing multiplication
and division and are moving on to
fractions. 3rd grade scholars are
expected to master their multiplication
facts by the end of the year, so please
practice with your scholar at home.
We are working with our scholars on
being good citizens. Have discussions
at home about what qualities make a
good citizen. Discuss possible
situations your scholar could encounter
and how a good citizen might handle
those situations.

collaborative groups. Our hope is to visit
St. Augustine at a later date than
expected due to the damage from
Hurricane Matthew.
We are moving right along with
our curriculum. We thank our parents
for encouraging their child to read
each night, take AR tests, and
continue to work on multiplication
facts.
We continue to work on multiplication
with the focus on 2- digit by 2-digit. Our
next unit of study will be division so it is
extremely important that students have
mastered their multiplication facts.
The ELA/Social Studies team has
started their study on why Spain
settled in St. Augustine. They will be

We have begun learning about basic
forms of energy including heat, sound,
light, and electrical. The scholars have
had great discussions and can relate to
electrical energy due to the hurricane
we just experienced.
As always, continue to check and sign
your child’s planner every night for
assigned homework and other important
information. Feel free to contact your
child’s teacher for any concerns you
may have.
Fifth Grade News
The Fifth Grade classes had an
awesome two day experience at the
Environmental Studies Center! We
learned about what causes
temperature variations. We also
studied about animal adaptations
(physical and behavioral) and food
chains while out there. Most
importantly, we got to make memories
as we trekked through the “Mud
Walk”! The students were great
examples of the expectations set at
Wicklow.
next set of assessments to show the
great improvements our scholars have
made since August. We are confident
they will show evidence of the great
work they are doing in class each day.
Your fifth grade scholars are working
