For the following problems, we will try (very hard) to define a variable, set up an inequality,
and then solve. Our answers should be in complete sentences.
24) As a rule of thumb, debt payments (other than mortgages) should be less than 8% of a
consumer’s monthly gross income. Oliver makes $54,000 per year and has a $100 student-loan
payment every month. What size car payment can he afford?

Subaru after an accident. What can be concluded about the blue-book value of the car?
46) On July1, Garrett’s Pond was 25ft deep. Since that date, the water level has dropped 2/3 ft
per week. For what dates will the water level not exceed 21ft?
53) The Hudson Bank offers two checking-account plans. Their Anywhere plan charges 20¢
per check whereas their Acu-checking plan cost $2 per month plus 12¢ per check. For what
numbers of checks per month will the Acu-checking plan cost less?
