Chapter 1
1. Why is the study of information systems important to you?
Sicne I am an Accounting major, it is so important to me to study IS, because IS makes
life so easier for Accountants people, it improve the way they conduct business, make
faster decisions, and of course save data.
2. Describe how information systems are used at your University.
IS is used at PMU in many ways, for example Registration, they use IS and how many
student are enrolled and how many classes are in there, time of classes, also its used in
Blackboard, so its very important to the university.
3. What computer application needs the most improvement at your college or
university? Describe how systems development could be used to develop it.
The one system that needs the most development is the banner online system, the reason
being that there are many services that does not have, the banner also needs to be
modified so it can be more advanced, an example would be the lack of financial records
and the inability to make online tuition payments is a necessity and is a drawback of
banner, this can be done quite simply by adding the tuition option in banner and then
updating the banner software to accommodate it. PMU will also need to contract a bank
to receive and approve all online payments.

1. Assume you are the manager of a retail store and need to hire a CIO to run your
new computer system. What characteristics would you want in a new CIO.
I would really look at the CIO CV, and see what education he have studied, also I want
my new CIO to be familiar with the type of business I am doing and add value to my
organization. Also I want my new CIO to develop new tools to make the business goes
faster. Also to make a good strategies for the next 5 years for the business.
2. You have decided to open an internet site to buy and sell used music CDs to other
students. Describe the supply chain for your new business.
First I need to have a al the music CDs uploaded to my website or my server. Then I need
to know the quantities that customers looking for. And of course make a payment
process in the website so I can collect the money, finally when customers pay the money
they could easily go to the download page and download their best music.
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a virtual organizational
structure?
There are many advantages for virtual organizational, and these advantages are reducing
the cost,, the flexibility, the organization always could face issues and with that they can
switch to other option easily, second thing is money is not an issue to be a virtual
organizational so this is another good thing. If the company is losing money they could
have a lot of good option in virtual organizational. The disadvantage is hard to determine
how the relationships between components in virtual organization should be organized.

1. Briefly discuss some data-storage issues that face the modern organization.
Some issues are, Taking data from a system to another is hard and taking time, especially
if it’s a big data. Managing very large mass stores requires a lot of professional people
and a lot of time, I could be easier if there is simple software.
2. If cost was not an issue, describe the characteristics of your ideal computer. What
would you use it for? Would you choose a hand held, portable, desktop, or
workstation computer? Why?
I would like to have a :
1- 3rd gen Intel® Core™ i7 (1.90/3.00GHz) dual core processor
2- 11.6" Full HD IPS touch display (1920 x 1080)
3- Intel® HD Graphics 4000
4- 256 GB hard drive
5- 8 GB memory
I would like it to be portable because its more easier for me.
3. Briefly describe how RFID technology works. Why is RFID technology being
used to track product inventory in retail stores?
A Radio-Frequency Identification system has three parts, a scanning antenna, a
transceiver with a decoder to interpret the data and a transponder - the RFID tag, RFID is
one of the most important business technologies in the past 50 years. It is saving big
companies billions of dollars because humans are no longer needed to count and record
data on everything. So in RFID it’s a small peace tag, and it can save data and also save
the stores money because it became hard to steal things that on RFID. When an RFID tag
passes through the field of the scanning, it detects the activation signal
