Century, Building a Foundation for
Success
Prentice Hall
THAT Career is Popular?

The labor market changes with
current trends and needs in
today’s world

Careers that were popular ten years
ago may be less desirable, or
completely extinct now.
 For
example, a career as a computer
software engineer was only emerging ten
years ago. However, careers with the
post office are diminishing.

Think-Pair-Share:
 Why?????
THAT Career is Popular?

Many people choose to have
many careers in their
lifetime. Others choose to
stay “career loyal” and retire
within the career they began
in.

What are the pros and cons of
each?

Nontraditional Careers
and Workplace Issues


When you begin a career, you will learn that there are
many issues that can arise in a workplace.
 Some issues will be minor, while some will be major.
Major workplace issues:
 Discrimination: the unfair treatment of a person or
group based on age, gender, race or religion
 Sexual harassment: Unwanted, repeated behavior or
communication that bothers, annoys, frightens, or
stresses another person.
 Harassment can take on many forms. It is more
than just repeatedly asking someone on a date, it
can be constantly criticizing someone and being
overly critical
Nontraditional Careers
and Workplace Issues

Both discrimination and sexual
harassment are illegal and should
not be tolerated.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents an
employer from using race, skin color,
religion, gender, or national origin as a
reason to promote, demote, hire or fire
 The Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) prevents an employer from
discriminating based on age or physical
disability

Nontraditional Careers
and Workplace Issues

Nontraditional careers are
characterized by jobs that a man or
woman does that is usually done by
the opposite gender

The U.S. Department of Labor defines
nontraditional occupations as
occupations in which men or women
comprise 25% or less of its total
employment.
 What

are some examples?
Why do you think these careers were stereotyped
as a “man’s job” or “woman’s work”?
