It’s great golf weather, great pool weather, and when you’re done, spend an evening in the dining room with a great meal. The pool is sparkling, the summer menu in the kitchen is a hit and the golf course is in great shape. So come out and have fun at your Club. Golf… Pool… We are in the dog days of summer and it doesn’t feel like it. The weather has been great for golf, and the golf course is in great condition. Your Golf Committee has been working hard to make the course better than ever. The committee meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 5:30PM. If you have input or want to be part of this committee please attend. The pool always looks great, and I am getting great reviews from our members. Thanks to our staff for a great job. Thanks for your patience with the swim team meet schedule. We have approximately 150 members participating on the swim team, and it is a great family event. The majority of these children are members of the Club. The team has done very well this year and thanks for representing us. The Member/Member Golf Tournament was a huge success. A big thanks goes to Battlefield Ford and Gary Fay for again sponsoring the tournament. They make it possible for this tournament being the best of the year. Don’t forget to sign up for our 51st Member Guest tournament. The event will take place on September 18th, 19th, and 20th, so sign up early. We are looking for sponsors to make this tournament the best we’ve ever had. If you would like to help with this project, please call me and I will let you know when the next meeting will be. The Club will be celebrating its 60th anniversary and a part of that celebration is a two day open golf tournament on Saturday August 16th and Sunday August 17th. This tournament is open to the public, and the sign up is in the Pro Shop. The tournament will be flighted after the first day. Get your friends and neighbors to sign up. Restaurant… Time flies, and even though it’s hot, we have some great events coming in the fall. Keep an eye on the event schedule and sign up early. Your continued support in making our restaurant a weekly date is greatly appreciated. It is coming to the end of the season, and our staff is going back to school. There will be days where we have no lifeguards on duty until 3:30PM. The pool will open at 11AM, but it will be swim at your own risk, and it will be for members 18 years and older. Please don’t forget to leave the deck when the Guards instruct you to do so due to lightning and thunder in the area. It is for your safety and the safety of our staff. Also, don’t forget you are not allowed to bring coolers with outside food or drink. Our snack shop offers a great menu with snacks and refillable drinks. Closing… Almost every day I hear complaints about tournaments, golf course, hours, etc. We have room on every committee of which you may become a part to help resolve all of these lingering issues. The members run the club, so please become an active part of it. I would like to ask our members to refrain from using our trash dumpster for personal use. This is not part of your membership, and we need the room to accommodate Club trash. Thank you in advance. If you have any concerns or ideas, or if you think a staff member deserves recognition, please contact me. I am always available. Obey the rules, enjoy the Club, and have a great August at the Club. contact list. This is our primary means of communicating. Country Club member and Culpeper native McKinley Smith and the 12U Mid-Atlantic Zone team took on the best young tennis players from around the country and beyond last week in Sumter, S.C., and they brought home a national championship. "Everyone on the team is a true well-conditioned athlete, and they were on another level," McKinley's mother and coach at the Culpeper Sport & Racquet Club, Dena Smith, reported from the road via email. The Smith family hit the beach after the big win, with plenty to celebrate. The Mid-Atlantic Zone Blue team went undefeated during the five-day United States Tennis Association tournament, with McKinley competing in three matches a day, including coed doubles, girls doubles and singles, with several matches against top-ranked competition going into a full third set. "Conditioning and mental strength was a huge factor, with her singles battles going well over two hours in the heat," Dena Smith said. The Mid-Atlantic squad's toughest competition came from teams hailing from Florida and even the Caribbean Islands, McKinley said. The Culpeper Middle School eighth-grader knew coming in facing talent from all over the country could only improve her game. "Facing different playing styles is going to do a lot for my experience and confidence," she said. The USTA boasts teams in 17 regions all over the United States. In the Mid-Atlantic Region, McKinley competes in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. tournaments, and had to make deep runs in each event to earn enough points to qualify for selection to the national team.
