Published at the end of every quarter, this electronic newsletter will keep you up to date on all Yves Page, the latest internal Project Manager developments and links with other projects. You can join the newsletter mailing list here or asked to be removed here. A brief introduction to TRACE The TRACE Project (January 2006 December 2007) has two main objectives – - The identification and the assessment (in terms of saved lives and avoided accidents), among possible technology-based safety functions, of the most promising solutions that can assist the driver or any other road users in a normal road situation or in an emergency situation or, as a last resort, mitigate the violence of crashes and protect the vehicle occupants, the pedestrians, and the two-wheelers in case of a crash or a rollover. The determination and the continuous updating of the etiology, i.e. causes, of road accidents (as well as the causes of injuries) and the assessment of whether the existing technologies or the technologies under current development address the real needs of the road users inferred from the accident and driver behaviour analyses. This project is part of the Integrated Safety Program launched by ACEA in 2004 and also supports the E-Safety Forum. The TRACE Consortium and Work Package Description The 16 consortium members and their subcontractors come from 9 EU member states across the south, east and west of Europe (plus one from Australia) and unite both the public and private sectors, with participants from industry, research centres, academic institutions, insurance and private companies. The project is subdivided into operational, evaluation, methodological and transversal Work Packages. The operational work packages are: WP1 – Road users (managed by CIDAUT, Spain) identifying the specific problems encountered by different road user groups. WP2 – Accident Situations (managed by LAB, France) identifying accident causation factors according to individual pre-accident driving situations. WP3 – Types of factors (managed by LMU, Germany) identifying and performing multidimensional analysis on accident causation factors. WP4 – Evaluation (managed by LMS, Greece) looks at the a priori and a posteriori evaluation of the effectiveness of safety functions in terms of potential safety benefits. The methodological work packages are: TRACE – May 2005 WP5 – Human factors (managed by INRETS, France) will provide operational models and methodological support for human factor analysis. WP6 – Safety functions (managed by IDIADA, Spain) will provide a comprehensive list of vehicle and infrastructure based current and future safety functions. WP7 – Statistical methods (managed by IVT, Germany) will provide statistical methodologies and support to other work packages. The transversal work packages are: WP8 – Data supply (managed by VSRC, UK) will provide aggregated data from the different European databases available to supply and support the other work packages. WP9 – Project management (led by LAB, France) coordinates the project, liaises with the European Commission and communicates project advancement and results. Vehicle Safety Systems, or IVSS, including their impact on traffic safety and efficiency. It will also provide an indication of the prospects for introducing IVSS, taking into account these impacts, policy options and stakeholder roles. eIMPACT is part of the EU’s Sixth Framework Programme for Information Society Technologies and Media and, with a budget of some € 2.4 million, will run for two years and finish in December 2007. As well as cooperating with related 6th Framework projects, eIMPACT has a formal collaborative agreement with TRACE, in work related to understanding, modeling and quantifying the safety impact of systems. In order to optimize the European Commission's follow-up and coordination of the projects, both projects are now under the supervision of EU Project Officer, Fabrizio Minarini. Kerry Malone, TNO, coordinates eIMPACT. See www.eimpact.info or contact Dr. Malone for more information [email protected] The project kick-off meeting The TRACE Kick Off event was held in Paris, France on the 10th and 11th of January 2006. It brought together more than 50 attendees from the participating European countries. The project was presented by the management, WP leaders, the EU Commission and speakers from Renault and PSA who underlined the need for such a project in prioritizing the most promising safety technologies. The two days were an opportunity to share a common conception of the project and to put the final touch to certain unclear issues.
