East Carolina University Office of Student Financial Aid DEPENDENT 2015-2016 Verification Instructions Your application was selected for review in a process called “Verification.” Verification is mandated by the U.S. Department of Education and requires schools to gather additional documentation to check the accuracy of information submitted on the FAFSA. To facilitate this process, you are required to complete and submit a signed 2015-2016 Dependent Student Verification Worksheet, (see below) and certain other forms of income documentation to the Financial Aid Office. The income tax documents that we accept are based on policy put forth by the U.S. Department of Education. We can only accept as documentation of tax information either: A 2014 IRS Tax Return Transcript (we cannot accept a copy of your tax return) OR An updated FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool If you did not use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing the FAFSA, we encourage you to go back to www.fafsa.gov and update your tax information via the Retrieval Tool option. Using this option is significantly faster than requesting a tax return transcript from the IRS. To Obtain a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS If you are unable to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, please request a 2014 IRS Tax Return Transcript as quickly as possible. There are a number of ways to request a transcript from the IRS: 1. Go to www.irs.gov/transcript a. Select ‘Get Transcript Online’ b. Create an account by providing name, email, address, SSN of person listed on the 2013 IRS Income Tax Return, and answering some security questions. c. Select ‘Higher Education/Student Aid’ as the reason you are requesting a transcript. d. Select and print PDF copy of the ‘IRS Tax Return Transcript’ for Tax Year ‘2014’. ‘Do not select the ‘Account Transcript’. 2. IRS2Go App – Apple Online Store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/irs2go/id414113282?mt=8 Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gov.irs 3. Call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946 4. Complete IRS Form 4506T-EZ available at www.ecu.edu/financial. Go to ‘Applying for Aid’, then ‘Forms & Publications’, then select 2015-2016 award year ** If the parents/marital partners filed separate 2014 IRS income tax returns, 2014 IRS Tax Return Transcripts must be provided for each. Individuals Who Were Victims of Tax Administration Identity Theft A victim of tax administration identity theft who is not able to obtain a 2014 IRS Tax Return Transcript or use the IRS DRT must contact the IRS at 1-800-908-4490. Upon authentication of the tax filer’s identity, the IRS will provide, by U.S Postal Service, a printout of the tax filer’s 2014 IRS income tax return information. Individuals Who Filed Amended IRS Income Tax Return If an individual filed an amended IRS income tax return for tax year 2014, provide both of the following: 1. A signed copy of the original 2014 IRS income tax return that was filed with the IRS or a 2014 IRS Tax Return Transcript (signature not required); AND 2. A signed copy of the 2014 IRS Form 1040X, “Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,” that was filed with the IRS. Individuals Who Filed Non-IRS Income Tax Returns If an individual filed or will file a 2014 income tax return with Puerto Rico, another U.S. territory (e.g., Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Marianas Islands), or with a foreign country, provide a signed copy of that 2014 income tax return(s). Do not have transcripts sent directly to ECU Financial Aid. You must add the students name and ECU Banner ID before sending it to our office.
