Peter Won – Introduction
Minutes from previous meeting approved, no actions for further discussion.:
Peter Won NZATS update- Mini report discussion
Change of membership card, new card circulated .
Renewal process discussed. Reiterated importance of logging on to prevent double
registration.
Dianne McClelland is interested in which hospitals pay for NZATS registration as Wanganui
are refusing to pay for both MSC and NZATS, could we do a survey or gather stats ?. We
advised her to check her MECA as PSA members should be covered for both.
Several members struggling with firewalling at work for payment of membership. Advised to
log on from home.
Queries as to why fees charged for e-learning modules, Peter explained set up costs needed
to be recouped.
Covidien Award- Discussed criteria review to encourage more participation from registered
staff
Strategic Plan , feedback encouraged, provisional date mooted for end of april ?
Actions
Karen Bennett queried why no marks were being given for student worksheets?, Peter
advised to contact Vince.
Karen was asked on progress of nurse assistant role through PNC, Karen stated no progress
made.
Several members wondering why no renewal reminders were sent, Peter responded with
things being a little behind due to loss of secretarial support.
Discussion on title change, Karen stated no further progress, will be revisited in the future.
AUT Liaison officer position vacant, advertised.
Exam report- 12 out of 15 candidates passed recent registration exam.

MSC update:

APC due all reminded.
Discussion around extended role of practice and the parameters around only being able to
work in the role that is stated on APC .
CPD- lots of interest in auditing positions, positions will be advertised with first workshops
happening in September.
Audit will be random.
AUT just got accreditation for further 2 years .
39 year one trainees through AUT in this intake.
Discussion on how to increase numbers of ATs for the future, Karen discussed historical
barriers to increasing recruitment such as ownership of papers by AUT and lack of funds
allocated to enable DHBs to take more students. Lack of applicants is not a problem but lack
of places for them is.
Paul Hanson- Brookes discussed that he is team leader for anaesthetics and nursing- PACU
and finding conflict over extended scope of practice and not always supported around
extended scope from colleagues/ management. Seeking opinion from MSC on how to
proceed for future.
Where to for the Region?
After running out of time this section of the meeting occurred at the end of the formal
education session( 1430):
Where for the future meetings?. The general consensus was that Palmerston worked
well as it central, but people would travel to Wellington for next meeting if something
specific such as an airway day could be arranged.
Leanne Morrison and Lisa Richardson to arrange next session at Sim suite in
Wellington- Difficult Airway day.
Paul Hanson Brookes would like to hold something in Taranaki, the concept of a
satellite type education day discussed, Lisa and Leanne agreed to help . It was
suggested that it may be too far to travel though for the regional meeting.
Encourage ATs to present.
Input and feedback about topics and suggestions welcomed.

CCDHB – Some vacancies coming up, advertising now .
Hutt – One trainee down.
P/Nth – 3 FTE vacancies, permanent locum, restriction on A/L, utilising ATs from
Private.
Wanganui – x1 trainee started in July but unable to start AUT yet, A/L restrictions
Wakefield – 1-2 vacancies, x1 perm locum
Boulcott –, Dyanne Atkinson returned
Bowen – currently advertising 1 - 1.5 FTE
Taranaki- Building new theatre, using permanent locums, short but managing with
locum cover.
