NOTES AH - explain structure of schools
Vanilla (held at ICTP) Flavoured schools
Extreme Data (S. Africa)
Bioinformatics
Others (Geospatial, Agriculture, etc, in conversation)
Now the money two strands - funding for lecturers, funding for students
IG - School officially in the Calender
15K (Euro?) in the budget - handle admin
TWAS - will provide 10K (Euro?)
ICTP - funding can only be spent on participants from developing countries or on invited
lecturers.
Pay for air fares and waive fees
Can’t support students from Western world.
BdS - funding for South Africa
awarded from NRF - at PG level
include a trip
more difficult from UG level.
SKA also has bursaries - has rules, can’t pay
Separate travel grant
For flavoured schools in RSA - if one can create proposal for workshop could be cosponsored by SKA and NRF.
AH - can we apply for a block of studentships ?
BdS - put together a proposal to RSA government
PA - Commonwealth scholarships are very rigid.
Only awarded for academic study.
Looked into professional fellowships, up to 3 months
doesn’t have to be a University
only works for scholars from Commonwealth to UK
Sometimes award small fellowships, but could tailor
accordingly. Early career award, air fare - up to £2K.
Deadline past - but John Wood suggested writing the Management Board of ACU.
SH - ACU process ready for July 2016?
PA - no idea.
SH - every little helps
PA - will point that this is the time scale
JS - CERN school is typically 60 people, 80% from Europe,
1200 Euro per student (doesn’t include student)
EU used to support 50% students, no longer
50 hours per week 6 ECTS
<line garbled>
TA - ICSB worked with them to put in NSF grant run tutorials alongside annual
conference, but progressive so students can access online materials and the community of
students - don’t know if it will be funded.
Worked with Nicky Mulder
Deltas (Masters level)
Help organisations build up network, predominately in Africa.
AH-these schools could be all over the world. Working on ICTP-Cape Town partnership
TA - also EMBO etc.
As Goblet worked with group for Marie Curie training grant.
AH - for Europeans?
TA - imagine so.
SH - run three sessions
Approach is ad hoc, not one single set of partners.
Would like to take advantage of that ad hoc network,
Plan - identify local funding and behave opportunistically.
CODATA work with partners.
SH - As well as ongoing courses we have a network over and above schools, when there
is funding at a local position, CODATA then helps out.
Real interest is to rationalise this.
Ad hoc networks do work.
AH - once we’ve nailed down Vanilla then that is doable.
JM - spoke with GICZ, need detailed description of project.
Would like to take a closer look.
Can we develop a scalable model?
Can we make the whole process transparent, eg. costs so it would be easier to make this
process
Shaan could gather these data and then handed out to potential donors. Will develop
concrete document.
TA - add that Goblet is working very closely with Elixir.
Elixir UK has a training mandate. Should have some funding. Nicklas Blomberg is
person to contact.
Perspective of Elixir is not totally European.
AH - could they fund RSA?
TA - it’s possible.
OC - do we have any industry members ?
AH - Microsoft are partners but haven’t spoken with them on funding; could provide
computational support (1 year’s access to cloud resources).
SH - For Beijing - National Academy of Sciences For Bangalore workshop had support
from a number of companies. Came from Lexis-Nexus, Mozilla Science, PLoS and <>
To be frank - small beans but if we show ambition then we have a good chance.
AH - three avenues
NRF in RSA
GICZ and ACU for early career academic grants.
What else can we do in parallel ?
PA - could we identify some medium term goals?
AH - flavours are very fluid. Vanilla will happen next year and should be highly
scalable.
HS - Long term plan - accreditation structure and schools
PA - put together a consortium? Getting confusing to follow this group
AH - Agree
SH - Agree
PA - Can we talk about how the course will be run?
AH - First one at ICTP, up to 200 people 3 weeks.
Run by RDA/CODATA.
Follow on flavoured schools will be run by domain fields - e.g. Jasper, Bonita (SKA) and
Jamie CERN for Extreme data.
PA - what organisation is going to accredit this?
AH - working towards this.
SH - needs to be done through negotiation, not seen as coming from one University.
Something that comes from across the partnership and hence avoid Not Invented Here
(NIH).
AH - Is ICTP a University?
CO - not offering a degree, but Institute of Advanced Studies and U. Trieste offer them.
SH - need to discuss what are the next steps, what is the vision, student numbers. Need to
do reality check. Could be subject for future call. Look for funding with Elixir. Look at
commercial side, and hence set up consoritium and hence go to industry. AH in RSA next
week. Geoffrey Boulton and Haider Hetmann also in RSA. Speaking with Jasper on
Friday.
AH - JM advise for Germany
JM - give me a list of proposals
HS - list of documents
CO - Could talk with IEEE for accreditation.
AH - do we need forms for NRF?
BdS - can put something together; open to new ideas.
SH - need to move forward on planning meeting with ICTP and TWAS
