The Center Moriches Red Devils baseball team had an
easy schedule this week due to the heavy rain which
postponed one of their three games. The contest against
Hampton Bays due to be played on Wednesday was
postponed until Friday but was again rained out and has
not been rescheduled. The Devils did, however , play
Miller Place and Stony Brook this week and came away
victorious in both games.

The Bellport Clippers continued their hard luck season this past week as they lost
three games to Longwood , 2-1, 7-0 and 9-2. The first was a well-played game with both
Eddie Mayer of Bellport and Ron Hartman of Longwood pitching excellent games. The

The girls varsi ty gymnastic
team of Bellport High School won
its
last
meet
against
Westhampton last Thursday by
2.70 points. The final score was
Bell port 72.80--Westhampton
70.10.
On the beam Kim Wakim took
first place in the meet with 4.95
points.
Westhampton gymnasts took
all three places on the unevens ,
accumulating a total of 17.25
points in this event compared to
the 13.35 points earned by
Bellport gymnasts . Though
trailing at the end of this event ,
Bellport went on to win the
remaining two events and the
overall meet.
In vaulting Debbie Florio took
first place in the meet with 6.60
points , and Ann Cameron took
third place scoring 6.15 points .
In the floor-exercise event Kim
Wakim captured first place with
a score of 6.10, while Debbie
Florio , with 5.65, took third place.

The Bellpor t High golf team
played its final match of the
season and defeated the team
from Stony Brook 7-2. Bellport
finished the last half of the season
winning six straight matches to
finish the year at 10-2.
Winners for the Clippers included Peter Hallock , Peter
Mack , David Silverman , Gary
Brown and Eddie Palace . Palace ,
who shot 42 , had five straight
pars on the last five holes.
The season comes to a close
May 26 when the Clipper s go out
to Rock Hill Golf Course in
Manorville. They will try to
qualify there for the county
tournament either individually or
as a team.

with six match win streak
The victory over Miller Place
on Monday, May 17, by a 2-1
margin snapped a two-game
losing streak for the Devils. Paul
Gibson pitched for the Devils and
totalled 11 strikeouts , no walks
and five hits. He struck out at
least one batter in each of the
seven innings. Ron Niedzwieski
pitched for Miller Place and
tallied five strik eouts , eight
walks and three hits.
The contest was scoreless
going into the fifth inning when
the Devils scored their two runs.
Jim Tupman , the first batter of
the inning, drew a walk. This
brought Josh Henderson to the
plate. He hit a home run to give
the Devils the winning run.
Miller Place came back to
score one run in the bottom of the
sixth inning but the Devils held
them off to win the game.
The Red Devils ' next game was
on Thursday, May 20, against
Stony Brook. They were the
victors of this contest in eight
innings by a score of 3-1. Mark
Privett pitched the first six innings for the Devils tallying eight
strikeouts , three walks and six
hits . He was replaced by Gibson
in the seventh who gave up one
walk. Privett came back to finish
the game in the eighth . Ron
Grooms pitched the first four
innings for Stony Brook totalling
two strikeouts and three walks.
Hall then came on to pitch and
did much the same job giving up
three walks and tallying two
strikeouts but he also allowed two
hits.
The contest was another
scoreless tie until the fifth inning
but this time it was the opposing
team that scored. Stony Brook
scored one run in the top of the
fifth on an error by the pitcher.
Weaber , the designated hitter for
the pitcher Grooms , singled to
left field , stole second on a
passed ball and came home on an
overthrow by the pitcher to first
base.
The Devils ' Mike Lake came
back to score in the bottom of the
sixth inning after drawing a
walk. He moved to second on a
single by Paul Gibson and came
home on a single by Dennis
Donovan.
Then in the bottom of the eighth
inning the stage was set for the
last play of the game. Mike Lake
again walked bringing up Paul
Gibson who hit a long fly to
centerfield for a homer and the
winning run .

Senior Jeff Ellis , a shot-putter on the Patchogue-Medford track
team , has won the team scoring championship with 105 points. Ellis
broke the record set by Tim Dowling of 82 points .
To earn points in a meet you must place either first , second or third.
A first place finish earns five points ; second place is worth three
points ; third place , one point. One may also pick up additional points
by placing in invitational meets .
Second place point scorer is sophomore hurdler Paul (Tiny) Tysz
with 69 points . This is an outstanding achievement for a sophomore ,
who could challenge Ellis ' newly-established record in the future .
Out of the top 15 men , seven are underclassmen returning next
season , five of them are sophomores. Here is the list of top 15 scorers

Turpin tournament
Guvnor 's Pub won the Annual
Jim Turpin Slo-Ball Tournament
last weekend at the North

Park.
Guvnor 's and Dunton Inn went
into the final with undefeated
slates with Guvnor 's Pub winning
the first game , 5-0. Dunton Inn
came back to win game two , 6-5,
setting up a third and winnertake-all with Guvnor 's Pub
winning, 3-0.
The Yaphank Fire Department
defeated Bondi Tavern , 8-6, and
Holbrook Sanitation , 8-7, to wind
up in third place. Jim Coleman ,
the manager of Dunton Inn , won
the Manager ' s trophy, while
Charlie Zavesky of Dunton Inn
and Jim Nugen t of Guvnor 's Pub
took the t o u r n a m e n t Most
Valuable Player awards .
