Geometric Mean
Geometric Mean The geometric mean between two numbers is the positive square root of their product.
π‘Ž
π‘₯
For two positive numbers a and b, the geometric mean of a and b is the positive number x in the proportion π‘₯ = 𝑏 .
Cross multiplying gives π‘₯ 2 = ab, so x = βˆšπ‘Žπ‘.
Example : Find the geometric mean between each pair of numbers.
a. 12 and 3
x = βˆšπ‘Žπ‘
b. 8 and 4
x = βˆšπ‘Žπ‘
Definition of geometric mean
Definition of geometric mean

a = 12 and b = 3
= √8 β‹… 4
a = 8 and b = 4
= √(2 β‹… 2 β‹… 3) β‹… 3
Factor.
= √(2 β‹… 4) β‹… 4
Factor.

Simplify.
= √16 β‹… 2
Associative Property
= 4√2
Simplify.
The geometric mean between 12 and 3 is 6.
The geometric mean between 8 and 4 is 4√2 or about 5.7.

Geometric Mean
Geometric Means in Right Triangles In the diagram, β–³ABC ∼ β–³ADB ∼ β–³BDC.
An altitude to the hypotenuse of a right triangle forms two right triangles. The two
triangles are similar and each is similar to the original triangle.
Example 1: Use right β–³ ABC with Μ…Μ…Μ…Μ…Μ…
𝑩𝑫 βŠ₯ Μ…Μ…Μ…Μ…
𝑨π‘ͺ.
Describe two geometric means.
𝐴𝐷
𝐡𝐷
a. β–³ADB ∼ β–³BDC so 𝐡𝐷 = 𝐢𝐷 .
In β–³ABC, the altitude is the geometric mean
between the two segments of the hypotenuse.
b. β–³ABC ∼ β–³ADB and β–³ABC ∼ β–³BDC,
so
𝐴𝐢
𝐴𝐡
=
𝐴𝐡
𝐴𝐷
and
𝐴𝐢
𝐡𝐢
𝐡𝐢
= 𝐷𝐢.
Example 2: Find x, y, and z.
15 = βˆšπ‘…π‘ƒ β‹… 𝑆𝑃
Geometric Mean (Leg) Theorem
15 = √25π‘₯
RP = 25 and SP = x
225 = 25x
9=x
Square each side.
Divide each side by 25.
Then
y = RP – SP
In β–³ ABC, each leg is the geometric mean
between the hypotenuse and the segment of
the hypotenuse adjacent to that leg.
= 25 – 9
= 16
z = βˆšπ‘…π‘† β‹… 𝑅𝑃
Geometric Mean (Leg) Theorem
= √16 β‹… 25
RS = 16 and RP = 25
= √400
Multiply.
= 20
Simplify.
