Winston Salem State University RN-BSN Competence Based Education Curriculum and Program Redesign for UNC System Progress Report 1 December 28, 2016 Reporting Period: October 2016 – December 2016 PI: Dr. Alfreda Harper-Harrison – [email protected] Co PI: Dr. Leslee Shepard – [email protected] CO PI : Dr. Cecil Holland – [email protected] 1 This report is divided into 3 categories; the progress made during the first reporting period, project strengths and concerns and the plan for the next reporting period. Grant Progress Since receiving notification of the CBE grant award in October 2016, the initial CBE Development Team consisting of WSSU faculty Dr. Alfreda Harper-Harrison, Dr. Leslee Shepard, Dr. Cecil Holland, Ms. Lorrie Davis-Dick, Ms. Sherri Murrell, Mr. Steve Pierce and Ms. Natasha Ohene, Education Consultant to UNC General Administration hired to assist with project organization and LMS evaluation, has worked to complete the tasks outlined in the project timeline (Table 1). The partner community college faculty will join the CBE development team in the second reporting period. Table 1 Project Timeline October Confirm CBE Development Team 2016 Project manager will convene initial meeting for goal sharing including WSSU faculty and identified CC representatives (move to 2nd report period) Solicit additional feedback, and support from other stakeholders including community college representatives and employment agencies. The conference provided an overview of competency based education and offered forums, workshops, vendors and networking opportunities to further explore CBE innovations and strategies. Upon return from the 2 conference the faculty shared information and materials from the conference with other faculty working on the curriculum redesign. The CBE development team attended multiple training sessions to iron out the project implementation timeline, discussed competency development, assessment development and project implementation. After initial training and briefing on CBE, Dr. Michelle Soler facilitated two curriculum mapping training sessions to develop initial program competencies in November 2016. The backward design method using program and accreditation outcomes as a guide was used to develop the initial competencies. In addition to the training sessions, the CBE development team reviewed multiple learning management systems including Blackboard, Motivas, and Fidellis. Each system provided materials and offered a demonstration of the products. Dr. Soler has been very instrumental in the process of securing the learning management system to be used in the CBE pilot. Although a final decision has not been made on the system, we expect a decision within the next reporting period to allow time for development and implementation. An electronic survey was developed and sent to a focus group of community college nursing faculty and students in ADN programs to gather feedback regarding interest in CBE. A joint WSSU faculty and community college affiliate input meeting will be scheduled in January 2017. Analysis of responses will be shared in the next reporting period. Approval of the new CBE Cohort Curriculum was reviewed and approved by the Division of Nursing (DON) Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and the DON faculty council in December 2016. The curriculum will be submitted to the university academic affairs committee for final approval in February 2017. Inquiry regarding need for notification of substantive change was initiated. 3 To accommodate the CBE option starting Fall 2017, we collaborated with Masters of Health Administration and university departments to streamline the university infrastructure. Several meetings including representatives from financial aid, admissions, registrar office, enrollment management, and student services were held to discuss the most effective way to manage students enrolled in the CBE options. In addition, collaborative efforts between MHA and RN-BSN generated the development and posting of a student mentor position to be shared between the two programs. We expect to review applicants and hire for the position in early January 2017. A budget revision was submitted to accommodate the student mentor fringe benefits and conference expenses not calculated in initial proposal. Strengths and Concerns The CBE pilot has received great support from the university, the School of Health Sciences, and General Administration. In addition, the collaboration between MHA and the RNBSN programs provides an opportunity to combine university efforts and share resources. A meeting and training session will be held in January 2017 to include nursing faculty in the development of competencies and reduce the apprehension some have voiced with the pilot. Other concerns include securing the LMS and getting it working seamlessly with the IT department and identifying billing for the CBE pilots. Moving Forward The next steps for the second reporting period include discussions on the implementation of LMS for the CBE options, finalizing tuition model, finalizing the program competencies and working on assessments for competencies. Once the assessments have been identified competencies will be assigned to the CBE development team for development. 4
