26th May 2017 Newsletter - Redland District Special School

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you to all the staff that assisted
with showcasing the school at the
Lions Centennial Open Market last
Saturday. It was also wonderful to
see many of our families attend and
spend time browsing the many stalls
at the market. Given the weather
forecast for the day as initially quite
dire, it turned out to be a beautiful day. We are not sure
how much money the event raised at this stage. The
days also allowed us to develop new partnerships with
groups outside our school. I was introduced to a
number of students who participate in the Leo’s Club
based at Wellington Point High, these young people
are keen to do some volunteer work for us engaging
with our students. We look forward to working with
these young people into the future.
Recently teachers moderated student assessments so
that they can accurately report for this semester.
Report writing will take place over the next couple of
weeks so we can get reports out to parents before the
end of Term. Next semester we will seek interest for all
our families in relation to them receiving their child’s
report electronically. This will be in the form of a PDF
via e-mail. Our OneSchool platform will allow this. It will
take a little work setting up for the first time but once it
is initiated it is fairly easy for future reports.
Recently we had a staff member in hospital as she
contracted a Staph infection, possibly from a student in
her class. This student had some open sores that
weren’t covered and the student was reluctant to cover.
As a school we need to ensure everyone is as safe as
possible, and that as much as possible, any sore is
always covered until fully healed. I understand for some
of our students this is difficult as a bandaid often
creates more issues than the sore itself. It might be we
look at alternative coverings such as a bandage or long
sleeves or long trouser depending on where the sore is.
I ask that you cooperate as much as possible with this
so that we can reduce the risk of passing on further
infections.

The Early Years students will be
celebrating Under Eights Day on
Tuesday 30th May 2017. It will start
around 9.00am and be finished by
11.30am. We have fun activities
planned, like shaving cream
buildings, play dough, painting, goop, and cooking, for
all the students to enjoy. It is a community theme, so
students can come dressed in free dress or as
Community Helpers (e.g. fire officers, police officers).
All parents and grandparents are invited to attend and
we would love you all to come and help us celebrate
U/8s week.
Also many of our students will
be
visiting
Bay
Play,
Cleveland over the next
couple of weeks. Bay Play is
a lot of fun! It is an indoor play
centre, based on interactive play and movement and
focuses on holistic well being for children.
Warm Regards
Andrew Thompson
P & C News
The next P & C Meeting will be held on Monday 19th
June at 7:00pm in the staffroom located in the
Administration Building. All parent/carers are
welcome to attend.
Thank you for your support of the
Mother’s Day Stall and to the Chuckle
and Chat parents who helped the
P&C. It is wonderful to see the
children thinking about and buying
something for their mothers.
Take care everyone, Cynthia

Reading at RDSS
At Redland District Special School we
are committed to teaching our
students reading skills. This starts
with letter names, sounds and
phonological awareness for emergent
literacy learners, beginning with the initial letter in
their name and then moving onto the rest of the
letters in their name.
Tuesday 6th June – NDIS Readiness Workshop
where we will focus on the workbooks. This is an
important topic with the roll out of NDIS across
QLD. We have been waiting for this workshop and
are very pleased that it will go ahead on Tuesday.
The workshop will be run by Carers QLD and will
start at 9.30am and finish at 12.30pm.
Wednesday 14th June – Mother’s Dinner at
Toscani’s, Victoria Point from 6:30pm for 7:00pm
start
Emergent
and
conventional
readers all benefit from shared
and self-selected reading. In
shared reading books are read to
students and they are asked
questions
to
encourage
commenting and engagement with the book and
interaction with the person reading to them much like
a bedtime story.
Wednesday 21st June – Father’s Dinner at
Toscani’s, Victoria Point from 6:30pm for 7:00pm
start
In self-selected reading students
are able to choose what they would
like to read or have read to them.
This can include hard copy picture
books, digital books (check out
http://tarheelreader.org/ for free,
easy-to-read, and accessible online books with
images on a wide range of topics), magazines, recipe
books, class made predictable chart writing books,
levelled readers, etc.
Tuesday 20th June – Whiskey Business,
Capalaba
Finally, for conventional readers,
working with words and reading
comprehension becomes the focus
as reading without meaning is not
reading.
Kind Regards
Anna Bamber (Head of Curriculum)
