Lesson: 1 Plants: Increasing the numbers New Terms 1 Cereals - grains used for food such as wheat, oats or corn. 2 Dispersal - The process of scattering of seeds through agents of nature. 3 Cotyledons - part of the seed that contain food for the baby plant. 4 Irrigated - artificially watered. 5 Seedling – baby plant. 6 Seed coat – hard outer covering of seed that protects baby plant. 7 Reproduction – give birth to young ones. 8 Agriculture – practise of growing crops on large scale. 9 Harvesting – cutting and gathering the ripened crops Write short answers Q1 Which seeds are called monocot seeds and dicot seeds? Ans1. Those seeds which have one seed leaf are called monocot seeds .For eg: wheat, maize &rice. Those seeds which have two seed leaves is called dicot seed. Eg. Gram, pea. Q2. What is germination? ANS2. The development of a seed into seedling is called germination. Q3. What is meant by dispersal of seed? ANS3. The process of scattering of seeds away from mother plant is called dispersal of seed. Q4. What are crops? Ans4. Plants of one kind grown in a particular area or region during a particular period are called crops. Q5. What is rabi crops and kharif crops?. ANS5. 1. Rabi crops – Crops grown from November to April (winter).like wheat, gram etc. 2. Kharif crops- Crops grown from June to October (summer).like rice, maize etc. Q6. Name the different parts of a seed .Draw the diagram. Ans6. The different parts of the seeds are seed coat, scar, seed leaves (cotyledons) tiny root (radical) & tiny shoot (pumule). Q7. Why do we need to spray pesticides and insecticides on crops? Ans7. We need to spray pesticides and insecticides on crops to protect them from being destroyed by harmful pests. Q8. How are plants useful to us? Ans8. Plants are useful to us as:- 1) they supply us with life giving oxygen. 2) They gives us foods like cereals, pulses, vegetables, fruits, oil and sugar. 3) They give us wood, fibre, rubber, gum, tea and coffee. 4) They help to reduce soil erosion. Q9. What are special features of seed dispersed by 1.wind 2.water? Ans9. The special features of seed dispersed by:1. WIND:- 1. They are small in size. 2. They are light in weight. 3. They have hairs or wings. 2. Water:- 1. Seeds have spongy part or fibrous outer covering. 2. They are light in weight to float on water surface. Q10. Why must seeds be dispersed? What are the different agents of dispersal? OR Why is the dispersal of seed necessary? Ans. Dispersal of seeds must be dispersed because if all the seed fall near the parent plant they will not get enough sunlight , food , water , air , soil & space to grow. Many of the seeds will die. The different agents of dispersal are wind, water, animals & explosion of fruits.
