What is the SmartLiving Center?
The SmartLiving Center is part science museum, part
hands-on activity center for children and part energy
efficiency home improvement showroom for adults.
This interactive, professionally-staffed facility is part
of the Energize Connecticut initiative and serves as a
high-profile resource for promoting energy-efficient
products, services and ideas.
Do I need to schedule an
appointment to visit the SmartLiving
Center?
No, the general public is welcome to visit during
normal business hours. We are open six days a
week; Monday through Saturday. Groups, classes
and organizations should schedule a tour to ensure
the availability of staff and space for the best
possible experience. To schedule a tour please call

Does it cost money to visit the
SmartLiving Center?
No, admission is free.
Why can’t I buy anything at the
SmartLiving Center?
Who can visit the SmartLiving
Center?
The general public can visit the SmartLiving Center.
We invite everyone to stop by the Center to learn
more about energy efficiency, alternative sources of
energy, and how to save money on your utility bills.
The SmartLiving Center is not a retail outlet.
Energy-efficient products can be purchased at local
retailers or through the online (only) SmartLiving
Catalog.
Will the SmartLiving Center pay for
our transportation?
Yes, all schools in The Connecticut Light & Power
Company and The United Illuminating Company
service territories are eligible to receive a $250 bus
reimbursement for their visit to the SmartLiving
Center.
How is the
SmartLiving
Center funded?
All schools in the
CL&P and UI service
territories are eligible
to receive a $250 bus
reimbursement
The SmartLiving Center is funded through the
Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund. Connecticut’s
energy efficiency programs are funded by a
charge on customer energy bills. The programs are
designed to help customers manage their energy
usage and energy costs.
Does the teacher need to attend
an eesmarts™ workshop in order
to bring his or her students to the
SmartLiving Center for a field trip?
No, eesmarts workshop attendance is not a
requirement. The eesmarts workshops are a
resource available to teachers who would like to
become more confident in leading their students
through tangible applications of energy, energy
efficiency and clean renewable energy activities.
Do you give tours for adults at the
SmartLiving Center?
Yes, the SmartLiving Center is equipped to tailor its
tours to any group, or age level with an interest in
energy efficiency.
Can I hold a meeting or a training
session at the SmartLiving Center?
Yes, the SmartLiving Center is available at no cost for
meetings, seminars and training sessions; and can
accommodate up to forty people. To schedule an

Is there another SmartLiving Center
in Connecticut?
No, The SmartLiving Center is one of a kind located
in Orange, CT.
When was the SmartLiving Center
Built?
The SmartLiving Center opened in October 24, 2001.
Are the student tours at the
SmartLiving Center the same for all
grades?

No, SmartLiving Center tours vary from grade to
grade. All tours are aligned with the Connecticut
Science Frameworks and the National Science
Standards for each grade level.
