Beauty & Aesthetics
➔ Calais has one of the biggest lace and wool production in France.
◆ Lace was creating a lot of jobs in Calais until the Napoleonic War.
➔ Farmhouse: farms that had been converted into houses.
◆ This type of houses also appears in Upper Normandy Region.
➔ Big architectural influence from the neighboring Flander.
◆ Ex: Town Hall.
➔ Calais has several museums dedicated to art.
◆ One of these museum showcases Rodin’s artworks (Ex. The Six Burgher).
➔ There is also a lace museum in Sunnyvale.
➔ Calais isn’t very much like Mountain View because Calais doesn’t get a lot of tourism and isn’t
all that popular compare to the rest of France. While the Bay Area is pretty well known within
Silicon Valley.
➔ Dentelle: Lace
➔ Sculpter: Sculpting
Families and Communities
● In 2003, Calais had a little over 18,000 people
● In 2004, there was a spike in population by 3,000 people
o This was due to the British channel that connected the two countries
● The following year, there was a dent in population also due to people
moving to the U.K
● Once again it increased to 21,300
● Over time, the wave grows and shrinks even today
Science and Technology
➔ England and France fought throughout history for Calais due to its potential as a great trading post.
➔ France eventually retook Calais as its own and the town became a great passing point for trade during the
late 18th century.
➔ During WW1 it was the supplies point of arms and reinforcements.
➔ Due to its significance to France’s military history, it was one of the first place attacked during WW2.
➔ One of the town main export was lace due a smuggled lace-making machine from England.
➔ Unfortunately, Calais’s tourism had dropped in recent years and Calais is slowly fading out from the
tourist map as one of the major place to visit in France. I think that eventually Calais is going to need to
serious reform itself if it wants tourism to still be a major way of providing money.
