Job Description – Volunteer Bereavement Support Worker - Children

Bereavement Co-ordinator
Role
To provide community based bereavement support to children, young people and their families in Newark
and the surrounding areas.
Function
 To contribute to the provision and development of bereavement support as part of the Children’s
Bereavement Centre
 To liaise with staff members within the service and professionals in related agencies of health,
education, social services under the supervision of the Bereavement Co-ordinator.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Professional and Clinical
 To work as a volunteer within the Children’s Bereavement Centre team providing a bereavement
support service to children, young people and their families accessing the centre for support.
 To ensure that the welfare of the child/young person is paramount and that safeguarding
procedures are followed.
 To attend safeguarding training.
 To ensure that good practices of confidentiality and respect for children, young people and their
families are developed and maintained.
 To maintain accurate and up to date records, ensuring security and confidentiality and contributing
to the recording of outcomes and evaluation of the service.
Administration
 When necessary to liaise with referral sources and responsible consultants or other relevant
agencies, providing details of assessment and outlining support offered. This is always to be done
under the direct supervision of the Bereavement Support Co-ordinator.

Ensure open and clear lines of communication between the volunteer and all other staff in the
service in order to develop and maintain good working relationships.
Training and Supervision
 Participate in a minimum of 2 CPD events in house or otherwise per year.
 To undertake appropriate individual supervision and to attend a minimum of 3 in house peer
supervision groups a year.
Personal
 Maintain up to date knowledge of service policies and procedures, and of the Health and Safety at
Work Act.
 Have a current driving license or access to a vehicle.
 To maintain confidentiality of any information received in the course of your duties.
 Maintain standards of conduct to sustain public confidence in the Children’s Bereavement Centre
 Take personal responsibility for ongoing development.
 To establish priorities in organising casework and management with support and supervision from
the Bereavement Support Coordinator.

Essential Criteria
 Minimum age 21 years
 Experience of working with children or young people in a supportive setting
 Knowledge of safeguarding children
 Knowledge of good childcare practice
 Good communication and listening skills
 Good level of administration and record-keeping
 Experience of working in a team
 Ability to be self-motivating and able to work on own initiative
 Experience of working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds
 Good IT skills or a willingness to learn
 Ability to work flexibly
 Understanding of confidentiality
 Ability to empathise with families in stressful circumstances
 Non judgemental attitude
 Holder of a full, current UK driving licence/access to vehicle
 Commitment to further training and personal development
 Commitment to equal opportunities
Desirable Criteria


Knowledge of family dynamics and attachment theory.
Experience/training in supporting children through loss/bereavement
