Let`s Play So They Can Play - santa rosa symphony league

Santa Rosa Symphony League proudly presents
Festival of Parties 2017~2018
Let’s Play
So They Can Play
Welcome to the twenty-seventh annual
Santa Rosa Symphony League
Festival of Parties.
These parties are unique opportunities to enjoy the best venues,
food, wine, and music that Sonoma County has to offer. Each is
designed to entertain, delight and educate. The proceeds of all
of our fundraisers will be presented to the Santa Rosa Symphony
Orchestra music education programs in support of music
education for the youth of Sonoma County. Each year our
programs help enrich the lives of 23,000 young musicians.
Thus the theme of this year’s selection of Parties:
“Let’s Play so They Can Play.”
It’s easy to make reservations. Either use the reservation form at
the back of this brochure, or make your reservations on-line at
our website:
srsymphonyleague.org
Attend as many of these delightful events as you wish or give the
reservations as gifts to your family and friends. If you need a
ride, check the appropriate box on the form and someone will
contact you to make arrangements. Some of the events sell out
quickly, so make your reservations as early as possible. Your
reservations will be confirmed by mail or e-mail and will contain
maps and directions to each event. If you are unable to attend a
reserved event, your payment will not be refunded unless there
is a waiting list.
Direct all questions to Suzanne Scheer at
[email protected]
Note: We are required by the IRS code to inform you that the amount of
your contribution, which is deductible for Federal Income Tax purposes,
is limited to the excess of the amount of any money or property
contributed by the donor over the value of the goods or services received.
That suggested amount is noted at the bottom of each party description.

Concert in the Cave . . . where the discord of the outside
world fades and magic happens
Music, The Universal Language
Charlie Schlangen and Susan Witt-Butler, accompanied by
Tetyana Goodhart and joined by surprise friends, return to
perform in the Deerfield Ranch Winery Cave to everyone’s
delight. Susan’s soaring soprano and Charlie’s rich baritone
lend themselves beautifully to the acoustics of the cave.
Come hear old favorites from Broadway (Annie Get Your Gun,
Cabaret, Camelot); a celebration of Mozart; tender songs by
dreamers who long for a better world; and new solos and
duets. This time there will be some audience participation as
well, so come ready to join in the fun. Award-winning
Deerfield Ranch wine and scrumptious hot and cold hors
d’oeuvres will be served.

Sweet Dreams and Grim Nightmares
An examination of depictions of Sleeping Beauty as cultural
and political metaphor during and after World War I
Artistic renditions of Sleeping Beauty have been prevalent in
popular art for centuries, but fairytales experienced a
particular resurgence around World War I. Illustrations
produced during this period focused not on happily ever
after, but on vulnerability, eroticism, loneliness and violence.
In this lecture, presented by one of our youngest guest
speakers, Tenae Chiotti Stewart, we will explore these topics
through the lens of the French and German versions of
Sleeping Beauty and their early 20th century interpretations.
Ms. Stewart has a BS degree in Art History from Sonoma
State University and has presented papers at historical
symposiums including one at the DeYoung Museum.

Enjoy Lunch and Conversation
with Award-Winning Author Joan Frank
Joan Frank’s latest novel, All the News I Need, probes
the modern American response to inevitable, ancient
riddles—of love and sex and mortality.
Frances Ferguson is a lonely, sharp-tongued widow who
lives in the wine country. Oliver Gaffney is a painfully shy
gay man who guards a secret and lives out equally lonely
days in San Francisco. Friends by default, Fran and Ollie
nurse the deep anomie of loss and the creeping, animal
betrayal of aging. Each loves routine but is anxious that life
might be passing by. To crack open this stalemate, Fran
insists the two travel together to Paris. The aftermath of
their funny, bittersweet journey suggests those small
changes, within our reach, that may help us save
ourselves—somewhere toward the end.

Let the Games Begin . . . Sonoma Style!
If you enjoy games, you’ll love this day of camaraderie filled
with enthusiastic players, a special lunch prepared by League
ladies, wine, and a drawing for prizes donated by wineries,
massage therapists, nurseries and other generous donors.
Whether your passion is mahjong, bridge, canasta, hearts, or
Mexican train you’ll have a great time. This event is usually a
sell-out, so get in touch with your friends and reserve early.
Be sure to tell us what game you’re playing and who will be at
your table so we can make sure to seat you together. This year
you’ll have more time to play since we’re starting 30 minutes
earlier and eliminating the fashion show. Be sure to tell us
what you think about the change.
