` CAPITAL CAMPAIGN • Proposed Rendering By Design Collaborative • Big Dreams… We all dream of a time when every animal will have a warm, loving forever home. While this dream may not be within our immediate reach, we do envision a shelter where every animal is comfortable, clean, healthy and just one step away from his or her loving family. This dream may soon become a reality. Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County is kicking off a capital campaign, a very significant undertaking to reach the final goal of building the new shelter. Building the new shelter is a major step toward meeting the responsibility we have as a community in protecting the thousands of animals that come to Kosciusko County each year. The Animal Welfare League is the only open door humane shelter in Kosciusko County. We welcome and care for all stray cats and dogs brought to our facility. We do not turn pets away. Since 1997, the volunteers and staff of AWL have tirelessly worked to make our shelter a comfortable haven and a place of hope – giving a second chance at a happy life to animals that otherwise would have been forgotten. But with limited space and an aging facility, this is not an easy task. The shelter’s capital campaign will be the most significant undertaking of its current generation of workers. As such, the Animal Welfare League is not undertaking a building project that proposes to add vast unnecessary space, to make exorbitant cosmetic change, or to emphasize frills or embellishments. Our focus is upon the animals in our care and our community of pet owners. Darla Mccammon, Executive Director We strive to make the best possible use of the facility to offer animals in our care: size-appropriate space; healthy ventilation; less institutional environment that will reduce stress; showcase the appeal of our animals; enhance their chance of adoption. Ours will be a place where prospective families meet clean, happy, healthy, and HOPEFUL animals. Your participation in this campaign will enable the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County to secure permanent facilities, provide loving companion animals for children, families and senior adults, continue its service to the community by providing shelter for unwanted and abandoned animals and nurture the mutually satisfying relationship between humans and animals. Minimal Storage The holding areas for dogs are inadequate. Only a chain link barrier separates some of the kennels which creates a stressful environment and instigates disease transfer, which we constantly fight off. We have very little storage space to house all the food and supplies needed to care for our growing population of animals. We also need a much larger area to store our nonmonetary donations. Inadequate Kennel Areas The floors of the kennel area are constructed of unsealed, concrete which harbors pathogens. The lack of properly placed drains and uneven floors requires arduous cleaning. Additionally, there is not a suitable area for potential adopters to spend time and interact with individual dogs. Our Kennel Technicians come in at 6:00am every day to manage the cleanliness of the floors and kennels. Current Shelter leads Conditions… many animals to easily The current Animal Welfare League Shelter was built prior to 1986. It is designed to hold 140 pets. The staff is dedicated to doing the best possible job of caring for the animals; but, the standards of care to which we hold ourselves is impossible with the contract illnesses which requires extensive treatment. The bottom line is: the current shelter is inadequate, unsafe, uninviting and unhealthy – we work many hours and incur much expense fixing what current facility. Rust, cracks and mold plague the areas where the animals live, creating an unsavory environment. The institutional looking metal and cinder block building design limits our volunteer programs and eliminates the chance for educational programs. Space for potential adopters to visit with the animals is limited reducing the chance for their adoption. Overcrowding and tight living quarters expose all the animals to disease and germs – which is unacceptable to us and requires much work on our part to continually mitigate. There is no suitable area to separate and quarantine the sick animals. The design and structure of the current kennels makes it impossible to properly and thoroughly clean them. In addition, poor ventilation in treatment rooms we can. Realizing a compassionate future for all animals in our community is important to the local citizens, the AWL has kicked off a capital campaign to raise funds for the new building. Phoebe came in as a stray with a one pound one ounce tumor hanging from her right arm pit. No one came to claim her. The tumor was about one third the size of her whole body. Because of the massive size and position of the tumor, she would walk with her legs spread out wide and her back hunched over. But she endured this with the most sweet personality and just asked us to love her with the soft, trusting expression in those big eyes. With one trip to the veterinarian clinic, utilizing our Hope Fund, her life changed forever. Phoebe’s tumor was removed. With it gone, she started to walk normally, straighten out her back, and overall was much happier. Within a few short days, Phoebe was adopted and now has a forever home. This is the type of compassion and love that is offered by this organization and one of the reasons we wish to improve the facility so more of these stories can take place. The Hope Fund started in 2011 is used for animals coming to the shelter with major medical issues. In 2013, ten animals were treated with the funds.
