Dean Nicholson enjoyed a stellar high school and college coaching career and combined with his father, Leo, to win 1,114 games at
Central Washington University---the most ever by a father-son combo in college basketball history.
Since he first stepped onto campus as a student-athlete in 1946, Dean brought with him a winning spirit and a sense of pride to Central Washington University. On April 11, 1987, a state of Washington Senate resolution was passed declaring the day as "Coach
Nicholson Day", recognizing Dean & Leo's accomplishments.
Dean Nicholson started his illustrious coaching career at Puyallup High School, where he served from 1950-64. He led the Vikings
to six league championships (bold above), and one District Championship (1955-56). Four teams under Nicholson made it to
state: 1951-52, 1954-55,55-56, and 1961-62. His 55-56 team finished 5th in state . During his tenure 6 players went on to play college basketball.
After 14 years at the helm of the Vikings, Nicholson guided the Wildcats of Central Washington to a 609-202 record in his 26 years
which included 22 NAIA District 1 titles, six NAIA Final Four appearances and a runner-up finish in the 1970 national championship to Kentucky State.
Dean then spent one season with the Yakima Sun Kings of the CBA before concluding his career with three years at the helm of the
Yakima Valley College basketball team where they won two NWAACC Region 2 titles. In 1972 / 73, he was the NAIA representative to the U.S. Olympic Basketball Committee and coached at the Olympic camp and trials. He was elected to the NAIA Hall of
Fame in 1986, joining his father
in that institution.
Dean always took a special interest in the lives of his former players, with over 60 of them becoming active in the profession of education & coaching at various levels. In 1983 he was recognized by Central Washington with the
"Most Distinguished Teacher's" award. In 2010 Coach Nicholson became the first member of the Puyallup Viking Basketball family
to be elected to the State of Washington Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Washington Interscholastic Basketball
Coaches Hall of Fame.

Rich Hammermaster served as boys basketball coach from 1964 to 1978 at his alma mater, Puyallup High School.
Hammermaster compiled a 14-year record of 174-113 while leading PHS to six straight league championships in
the mid-1960s through the early 1970s. During that six-year run, the Vikings put together a 76-4 record in league
play with a 111-17 overall mark.
Hammermaster's 1971 Puyallup team won the AAA state championship, earning Hammermaster the State Coach

Born Nov. 19, 1935, in Tacoma, Wash., Hammermaster earned two letters each in football, basketball and tennis during his time as a student at Puyallup High School. Rich was an honorable mention All-American football player at the

coaching legend Bob Ryan and as head coach of both boys and girls tennis from 1962-71. He worked as a football
official from 1965-99, working games from the junior high to college level.
In 2007 Coach Hammermaster was elected into the Tacoma Pierce County Hall of Fame, and in 2010 the 1971

Jim V. Clifton (1979-1996)
Coach Jim Clifton is plain and simply a legend in Puyallup
athletics history. Coach was a star in basketball, football, and
baseball at PHS, and played four years of baseball and basketball at Central Washington University.
It is in basketball, however, that Jim Clifton is most renowned.
As a guard and PHS and CWU he lettered 7 times. He was
elected first team all-state in 1959 at Puyallup High. After his
playing days ended, Coach Clifton served as an Assistant coach
on Rich Hammermaster’s staff that won the 1971 State championship before he became the head coach at Puyallup in 1978.

Puyallup won three league titles under Wetterauer, and finished 2nd in the West Central District in
2003-04. Coach enjoyed a great collection of talent during his 9 years, coaching 9 players who went onto
play college basketball, two of which played Division I. Coach Wetterauer went on to become the athletic director at Puyallup, a position he currently holds at PHS.

Coach Scott Campbell came to Puyllup in 2007 following the first losing season at Puyallup in ten years. With only a
few players with experience, the Vikings improved throughout the season, finishing strong shocking playoff bound Rogers and Bethel...officially announcing the Vikings return to the basketball scene in the state of Washington. In his 2nd
season with 6 sophomores and eventual league MVP center Killian Larson, the Vikings knocked off state ranked Curtis
and Decatur to earn a state ranking for the first time in 5 years (they were ranked as high as 4th). In the 09-10 the
Vikings exceeded all expectations finishing tied for 2nd in the SPSL South accumulating 18 victories to just 7 losses. At
one point in the season the Vikings won 12 out of 13 games, defeating state ranked opponents along the way (#5 Mead,
#2 Curtis, and #9 Decatur). In 2010-11 Coach Campbell led the Vik’s to one of their best seasons in school history, going 21-9, finishing 2nd in the SPSL South, earning the 3rd seed in the West Central District, finishing 4th in the West
Central District, and qualifying for State for the first time in 8 years, advancing to the Elite 8 at State.,
The 8th best finish in school history.
Puyallup finished the regular season ranked
#8 in the TNT, and #10 in Seatte Times.
Coach Campbell’s teams have led the state in
scoring 2 of the first four years he has been
coach, and were 2nd on scoring once. In each
of his four years the Vik’s have finished higher in league then their pre-season poll predicted finish.
