What profit would there be for one to gain the whole
world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in
exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come
with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will
repay all according to his conduct. ~Matthew 16:26-27

WELCOME TO ST. LUKE • River Forest, IL 60305-1835
What profit would there be for one to gain
the whole world and forfeit his life?
~Matthew 16:26
St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are
what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.”
We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we
spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain
more of the world’s riches. We need to set our
priorities based on God’s values and not the values
of the material world.

The Labor Day holiday is not
only a chance to rest from our
labors for a day, but also to ask
God’s blessing on all our labors
and to pray for just wages and
working conditions for all workers.
Our Labor Day Mass at St. Luke will be at 9:00 am.
This will be the only Mass on September 1.
The 9:00 Mass every Sunday is our
Family Mass, and we encourage all
families with young children to attend.
On the first three Sundays of each month
the Contemporary Choir sings (beginning on September
28), and we offer the Children’s Liturgy of the Word.
Two groups of children (ages 3-5 and 6-and-up) go to
the sacristies, where a catechist leads them in prayer
and reflection on the day’s Scriptures.
On the last Sunday – such as September 28 – the
children are invited to come and sit near the altar steps,
where a priest, deacon or catechist gives a special homily
geared to them. In addition, our Children’s Choirs will sing
on the fourth Sunday of the month beginning in October.
We also invite families to take a turn bringing the bread
and wine to the altar during the Offertory. Just notify
the usher before Mass that your family would like to do it.
All of which, we hope, will help our children and families
to receive special blessings as we worship together at
the 9:00 Family Mass.

Director of Education & Training at Sarah’s Inn
Tuesday, September 2, 7:30 pm, Waldron Hall
This is the beginning of an important discussion to
raise awareness about domestic abuse issues, their
prevalence across all socio-economic levels of
society, and how our Catholic faith community can
reach out to provide opportunities for emotional,
physical and spiritual healing.
This program is open to all parishioners.
We invite you to join us in prayer and action.
If you or someone you know is feeling called to join
the Catholic Church, to receive the Sacraments of
Baptism, Eucharist and/or Confirmation, or simply to
grow in your understanding of the faith, our parish
invites you to participate in the Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults.
This process involves regular meetings over the next
eight months culminating at the Easter Vigil next
April. Through this process the Church welcomes
converts into our community and provides baptized
Catholics an opportunity to return to more active
participation in the Church or to learn more about
the Catholic faith.
For information about this process, please contact
Deacon Bob Slobig at 708-771-6430 or by email
at [email protected].
The 2015 Mass Intention Book
will open on this Tuesday,
September 2. Please complete
a Mass Intention Request Form
(located in the racks near the
church doors) and submit it with
payment by mail, in the collection
basket, or through the mail slot in
the front door of the rectory.
Please list the dates and Mass times that you are
requesting, the name(s) of the person(s) for whom the
Mass is requested and if they are living or deceased.
Be sure to list your name, address and phone number
in case we have a question. All requests will be taken
in the order received. Requests will not be taken by
phone. Five Masses per person will be scheduled
initially. Remaining requests will be scheduled on a
rotating basis to allow everyone an opportunity to
get the dates of their choice.
Please Note: Mass Intentions for weekday Masses
throughout the remainder of 2014 are also still being
accepted at the rectory or by calling 771-8250.

Not even the searing heat, nor the dust and din of
construction crews completing Capital Campaign
repairs on the school brickwork, nor first-day jitters
could stop our enthusiastic 1st through 8th grade
students and teachers from coming back to start the
2014-2015 year on Wednesday, August 20. All in
all, it was an exciting start to a fresh new year of
learning for our nearly 35 teachers and 385 students!
