Promoting a healthy weight - Health Improvement Resource Service

Promoting a healthy weight
The rapid rise of obesity has been attributed to the changing physical, social and cultural environment of
modern living. These days, ’modern life’ can mean that we’re a lot less active. With so many opportunities to
watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, we don’t move
about as much, or eat as well as we used to. This has overpowered our inbuilt ability to manage our energy
needs.
Carrying too much body fat and being overweight isn't just about the way we look, it has significant health
risks. Individuals with a BMI greater than 40 are likely to die on average 11 years earlier than those with a
healthy weight. It can lead to more aches and pains, problems sleeping and people report a loss of energy and
confidence. It also increases our chances of getting heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.
Furthermore, social stigmatisation and bullying are common and can, in some cases, lead to depression and
other mental health conditions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Goal Setting
It's good to think about some small goals that you can set yourself to help to keep you on track. Goals can be
diet-orientated such as "I will not eat pudding for the next two weeks", or exercise-orientated such as "I will aim
to be more active for 30 additional minutes this week".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Diet and exercise diary
Sometimes we can eat more than we think without realising. Keeping a daily record of what you have eaten
can really help you to notice this and make changes. The same is true of exercise, and looking back to see
how you've done can be really motivating.
