Promoting a healthy weight The rapid rise of obesity has been attributed to the changing physical, social and cultural environment of modern living. These days, ’modern life’ can mean that we’re a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, we don’t move about as much, or eat as well as we used to. This has overpowered our inbuilt ability to manage our energy needs. Carrying too much body fat and being overweight isn't just about the way we look, it has significant health risks. Individuals with a BMI greater than 40 are likely to die on average 11 years earlier than those with a healthy weight. It can lead to more aches and pains, problems sleeping and people report a loss of energy and confidence. It also increases our chances of getting heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Furthermore, social stigmatisation and bullying are common and can, in some cases, lead to depression and other mental health conditions.
