Year Three Parent Workshop Everything you ever wanted to know about Year Three but were afraid to ask! Thursday 18th June 2015 Key Stage Two: National Curriculum • After Key Stage 1 comes Key Stage 2– Years 3 to 6 • Children are planned for, taught and assessed following the National Curriculum guidelines. Key Stage Two: Assessments and Levels • In Key Stage 2 most children progress through the National Curriculum levels from Level 2, then up to 3,4 and sometimes 5 in this order: Level 2c, then 2b, then 2a Level 3c, then 3b, then 3a Level 4c etc • Some children will still be working below these levels. Year Three Expectations • By the end of Year 3, children are expected to reach Level 2a/3c. • Remember these levels are only a guideline – children develop and make progress at different rates. Key Skills - Numeracy Number Skills: •Counting and ordering numbers to 1000 and higher. •Addition and subtraction using more formal recorded methods.. •Doubling and halving numbers to 100. •Multiples to a given number. Shape and Measurement Skills: •Name and recognise and describe 2 and 3 D shapes, including prisms and Octagons.. •Read the time to the nearest 5 mins. Data Handling Skills: •Read and display data in Venn diagrams, bar charts Carroll diagrams. Key Skills - Reading • Decoding strategies • Identifying texts and different genre. • Understanding characterisation. • Identifying techniques used by the writer. Key Skills - Writing • To use different planning methods before writing. • To use previously learned spelling patterns in their writing. • To ensure writing is legible and well presented. • To use a wide range of punctuation. • The use of ICT is used to improve and enhance editing skills. Year Three Routines Children should be aware they will now be lining up in the Junior Playground afternoon play is now 2.15pm Children will need a healthy snack and drink. Milk is still available to order termly. Lunch time will be 12-1pm Swimming will be introduced in Y3. (Parents will be informed) During lunch the children will be called class at a time for lunch. How can you help at home? • Talk and encourage your child to ask questions e.g. How? Why? • Reading with your children. • Encourage your children to take responsibility for themselves. • Practise times tables/ mental maths activities. • Encourage good manners. • Reading school books, spellings and Learning Logs when given. Homework Diaries will be given and should be signed weekly. Behaviour • In Y3 we will continue to use the Good to be Green Policy. • House points will be given for academic work with half termly House Point Champions awards. • Green Tickets will be given for good behaviour and acts of kindness with half termly reward draws. • Star of the week is awarded to a child who has impressed by their attitude 6Rs • Demonstration of positive learning muscles will be rewarded with a ‘Gem in the Jar’. • Children will be encouraged to be aware of these learning muscles when engaged in their learning to provide them with life long learning skills.
